A small rural community where "everybody knows everybody"
Westover is a small rural community on the eastern outskirts of Birmingham, home to just under 2,000. In the town's center is City Hall, where the mayor and five-person council hold bi-monthly public meetings. City Hall and its adjacent library and park are center points of community togetherness, featuring small events like coffee with the mayor, music in the park and summer reading programs. “Westover is that everybody-knows-everybody type of community. It’s very personable,” says Realtor Davonna Uselton of Century 21 J. Carter and Company. Uselton is an area native and has sold homes across the Birmingham region for nearly 5 years. “It has a very rural feel with beautiful countryside. You get that quaint, home-town vibe.”
Residents moved to Westover for the land
The land is the draw to living in Westover, and spacious, woodsy lots offer a secluded feel with a sense of privacy. Several residents have between 5 and 10-acre properties, often used to farm or house animals. Several homeowners have small ponds on their properties. Most houses are custom to the original homeowner, and buyers will find several bungalows, cottages and ranch styles from the latter half of the 20th century. “There’s some new construction in Westover. It’s starting to build up in some areas,” Uselton says. “But there are very few subdivisions.” Newer, 21st-century homes include contemporary farmhouses with over 3,000 square feet. Many homes in the area have front porches, two-car garages and long fences. Houses cost anywhere between $250,000 and $500,000. Westover is not a walkable community, so there are no sidewalks, but locals enjoy a scenic drive through the curvy backroads that meet open fields and heavily wooded lots.
