Among the many parks in the Adamsville neighborhood, a dog-friendly one is Westport Woods.
A small town offering a slow-paced lifestyle
Sitting on the east end of Little Compton is the village of Adamsville, a small Rhode Island town defined by its winding roads, big fields and local businesses. A close observer will also find remnants of the area's history: Grays General Store is now closed but was once the oldest operating general store in the United States. Spite Tower, according to local lore, was constructed because of a feud between two friends, resulting in its name. Timothy Pitts, owner of Adamsville Wine & Spirits, says that aside from the town's historical origins, the community is what makes Adamsville special: "It's kind of like an elementary school playground. There might be some tiffs here and there, but we all know each other, look out for each other and enjoy spending time together." The majority of the neighborhood is made up of vast fields of farmland mixed with homes, resulting in a more slow-paced style of living. "It's a very quiet and peaceful area, a great place to raise a family," says Connor Dowd, a Realtor and Rhode Island resident. "You're going to be driving to other places a lot for more amenities, but the commute is beautiful because of all the nature." Residents take Route 81 to travel to other major cities, such as Providence, Boston and Newport.
The Barn restaurant is an Adamsville staple, despite its being across state lines.
Shopping & dining in Adamsville
There are no big-brand retailers in Adamsville. Instead, residents stop by local shops in the area, such as Adamsville Wine & Spirits or Adamsville Herbs. The most popular destination is The Barn, a breakfast and brunch restaurant operating since 1987. Literally housed in a two-story barn, the establishment is known for items such as French toast, eggs benedict and pumpkin pancakes. For groceries, locals travel outside of the neighborhood to places like Lee's Market.
Gray's Mill Pond in the Adamsville neighborhood of Westport is a relaxing spot for a coffee.
Enjoying the scenery at Grays Mill Pond
The entrance to Grays Mill Pond is hidden: Visitors have to park in Westport and then make their way down into the trail. Although there are only 0.5 miles to hike, the mud, stone and uneven terrain make it a more difficult task. However, anyone who has seen the pond's seasonal flowers in bloom will know that the trek is worthwhile. "It's such a quiet and scenic area. There's so much nature around us," says Pitts. "You're in your own little bubble, away from all the hustle." Walking east on Adamsville Road leads to the Westport Woods Conservation Park, which has over 80 acres of protected habitats and wildlife. Residents can walk on the 3 miles of trails shaded by trees or throw around a frisbee on the open fields. There's also a playground, but not in a traditional sense — instead, there's a discovery garden and wood instruments for kids to explore.
In the Adamsville neighborhood of Westport many homes are delineated by elegant stone fences.
Houses with large lots and New England architecture
Homes here include classic New England architecture, such as colonial-inspired homes and Cape Cods. They come with shingled roofs and paved driveways, some made of cobblestone, as well as garage spaces for parking. Due to the area being more rural, some properties feature larger lot sizes. Houses sit on green lawns with plenty of shrubs and trees as decoration. Although the neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks, residents still walk or bike on the side of the road. Prices start at 550,000 and go up to 850,000.
Westport Middle School and Westport High School are housed in the same building with excellence.
Famous graduates from Westport High School

Westport Middle and Westport High are located in the same building, meaning that students in grades five through 12 all attend classes in one place. Enrollment numbers reach around 850 students, but there's still a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. The combined school opened in 2021 after completing a $97 million renovation. The middle and high school receives a B-minus from Niche overall. Notable alums include Black Francis, leader of the landmark indie rock band the Pixies.
Westport Bait & Tackle is the go-to place for all your fishing needs.
Attending The World's Shortest St. Paddy's Day Parade
The World's Shortest St. Paddy's Day Parade started as a joke between two friends in 2022. Over the years, it's slowly transformed into a new tradition for Adamsville. People living in Little Compton and even as far as Boston come to join in on the festivities. The parade is only 89 feet long, but it features musical acts, local businesses and small floats. Afterward, festival-goers fill up on corned beef and cabbage from Bootleg BBQ.
Looking over Gray's Mill Pond in the Adamsville neighborhood of Westport nature is abundant.
