Westport Point has a rural woodland feel and the surrounding water is a real draw.
Semi-rural coastal community in Westport
One of Massachusetts's few remaining coastal farming communities, Westport Point is home to well-tended fields, wild woodland and sprawling salt marshes. With pristine beaches and swaths of undeveloped land, Westport Point offers the very best of New England’s coastal lifestyle, including wood-shingled cottages, driveways dusted with white sand and sweeping waterfront views. “Westport is a sleepy town, and we like to keep it quiet. We’ve also got a lot of artisans, equestrians, and farm-to-table restaurants,” says James Sabra, a local broker with Equity Real Estate.
Rambling beaches and rolling dunes are the best parts of Horseneck Beach in Westport.
Westport Point’s wealth of natural coastal beauty
Horseneck Beach State Reservation, accessible from Westport Point via the Norman Edward Fontaine Bridge, features a 2-mile beach facing Buzzards Bay and trails traversing low-lying dunes. Local boaters enjoy easy access to the bay and other big boating destinations like Newport and Block Island. Visitors can also explore Big Ram Island by boat or canoe, paddling through the river channels that streak across the rippling salt marshes. Hikers head further inland to Dunham’s Brook Conservation area, a 160-acre property with meadows, forest and farmland. Here, winding trails flanked by tall trees crisscross the forest floor, wetland pools host salamanders and chirping frogs and golden stalks sway in the cornfield.
Greek Revival homes in Westport Point have a grand reputation for the classic style.
Colonials, Greek revivals and Cape Cods date to the 1700s
Homes in Westport Point date as far back as the 1700s. Home styles include classic two-story Colonials, Greek Revivals and New English-style cottages with rustic wood shingles. Closer south toward the harbor and small marina, shingled Cape Cods sit shoulder to shoulder. The area’s semi-rural roads are bordered by rock wall borders and tall trees, and many houses are concealed by private gravel driveways and thick foliage. “Different areas [of Westport Point] have differently valued houses. The natural division between the rivers and the bay also creates pockets with unique real estate prices. Close-knit cottage communities overlooking the river were established in the 1930s and 1940s. And today, old farmland has been divided up into large parcels with substantial homes. That extra acreage demands higher values,” Sabra says. Inventory is low, and the neighborhood’s upscale waterfront properties can sell for as much as $1.5 to $3.5 million. Inshore homes are priced anywhere from $450,000 to $850,000.
