Where you can have your space and know your neighbors

Locals say it’s not so much what’s in Hokendauqua, but what’s nearby that makes it so attractive. Home to nearly 3,500 residents, this Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, community is 5 miles from Allentown and an hour’s drive to Philadelphia and the Pocono Mountains. “It’s a community that’s close to a lot of big cities and attractions, but it’s got a small-town feel,” says Woody Howell, owner and broker of Real Estate of America, who’s been selling homes in the area for 30 years. “It’s the kind of place where you’ll know your mailman. You’ve got access to everything you need there, but it’s not overcrowded. You have your space.”

Homes from the late 1800s to the present day

Those looking to move to Hokendauqua will primarily find houses built from the late 1800s to the modern day. They come in a range of styles including duplexes, Colonial Revivals and contemporary homes with two-car garages. Properties typically rest along sidewalk-lined streets with spacious quarter-acre lots adorned with mature pine and maple trees that are common to the area. A cozy three-bedroom, one-bath cottage may sell in the low-$300,000s, while a more spacious four-bedroom, two-bath costs around $400,000. “The market is still strong there,” Howell says. “On average things sell within two weeks and sometimes there are multiple offers. The entire valley is low inventory. There are more buyers than there are houses. It’s been a sellers’ market for a long time.”
