Upscale housing in Wichita Falls
Stone Lake Estates offers upscale housing around a small lake in Wichita Falls. “It’s in a little pocket away from most other neighborhoods surrounding it,” says Realtor Debbie Dobbins. Dobbins runs the real estate company Love to the Moon, Inc. and a YouTube channel devoted to the city. “Every time I drive over there, I feel like I am in a different place,” she adds. “The homes are bigger, more modern, and they look more expensive, and they are more expensive.” An average weekend here looks like golfing at Weeks Park and walking the paved waterfront trails at Lake Wichita Park. The city college, Midwestern State University, is just 3 miles away for parents who aren’t ready to say goodbye yet. The city’s major shopping is also just a short drive from home, while Sheppard Air Force Base, a major employer, is 11 miles north.

Stone Lake Estates homes were built in the 2000s
The neighborhood still has open land waiting to be developed, and some homes settled on half an acre, lending to a spacious feeling. While other areas of Wichita Falls are filled with 100-year-old cottages or '70s ranch-styles, here, brick neo traditionals built in the early 2000s to the 2010s line the roads. Most prices range from the mid $300,000s to the low $400,000s, but the most extensive and most expensive residences circle the lake in the neighborhood's southwestern section, fetching from the high $600,000s to over $1 million. These prices are significantly higher than the city average, around $170,000. According to Dobbins, this is one of only 7 communities with a Homeowners Association. But she adds that residents pay $100 a year at most in fees: "The HOA at Stone Lake Estates is probably just for enforcing HOA rules. There are no common amenities like a community room, pool or tennis court." Homes come with garages, which is essential as severe storms in North Texas bring hail. Mini tornadoes are also common, but there have only been 3 significant tornadoes in Wichita Falls' history, the last of which was in '79. Droughts are common during the summer. The Wichita Falls Fire Department saw an uptick in calls in 2023, leading it to apply for a federal grant to grow.

A-minus to B-minus rated schools on Niche
Students may begin their studies at Fain Elementary School, earning an A-minus rating on Niche, and Barwise Middle School, which maintains a B-minus rating. From there, they can filter into Legacy High School, which opened in August 2024. Legacy and its counterpart Memorial High were opened to replace the Wichita Falls High School which was aging out after 100 years. Legacy and Memorial embrace a hybrid curriculum by integrating online learning, and they foster collaborative in-person learning through breakout rooms and large auditoriums. For a private option, Christ Academy is on Stone Lake Drive. For a convenient college track, Midwestern State University is just over 2 miles north, with a 90% acceptance rate.

The local YMCA got a fresh update
Dobbins says the local YMCA on Bartley Drive is one of the best in Wichita Falls. “They did an overhaul on it in the past two years. Everything is updated and new. Whenever I talk to someone, they say, ‘oh, I went to a Pilates class or a special yoga class. There are so many different programs going on over there.” Just north, Weeks Park spans over 250 acres and encompasses not only the city’s golf course but also a 3-mile concrete trail, 9 lighted tennis courts and a large picnic area. Edgemore Park, just over a mile east, has a playground with swings and a jungle gym. Southwest of the neighborhood, Lake Wichita Park wraps around an over 2,000-acre lake, offering a kayak launch and a boardwalk where people fish. It’s also the site of the city’s only dog park, offering off-leash areas for small and large dogs with obstacle courses and toys from balls to ropes. This park connects to Lucy Park, another major recreational hub and the site of the falls the city is known for, via its trail system. Kiwanis Park is just north of Lake Wichita Park and is known for its prairie dog enclosure, where people get an up-close look at the playful creatures.

Walmart Supercenter to Target close to home
"We have a Walmart Supercenter and a shopping center right there. There's another building supply company called Southerland's. It's more farm and ranch but it's like a Home Depot or Lowes. A lot of people love going there as opposed to the big boxes." The shopping center, 2 miles west, also has a Dollar Tree, McDonald's and Taco Bell. Dobbins says people love fast food in Wichita Falls, but there are also a few local spots. Catfish Grill off the Southwest Parkway has been a local go-to since 1993 for its fish frys served with okra and coleslaw. When locals want more dining and shopping options, they can head north along Kemp Boulevard, where there's a slew of chains, including a Target and the Sikes Senter Mall, where there's an At Home store and JC Penney's less than 3 miles away.
