Barefoot Bay has a beach to the north and suburban amenities in its southern area
Just 7 miles from Old Town, Barefoot Bay combines exclusive beach living and a convenient northwest Wichita location. About 50 homes surround the North Shore’s 120-acre lake, where locals can enjoy a day of powerboating or swimming from their private stretch of sandy shoreline. “The lake is never crazy busy because the community is so small,” says Heather Golden, an associate broker and Realtor with J.P. Weigand & Sons, who has sold several homes in the area. “You don’t have to deal with heavy boat traffic and noise, which are problems for many lake neighborhoods in Wichita.” While homes to the south don’t have lake access, they have pond views and walkability to resident-only amenities. The neighborhood is also located along West 21st Street, where locals can browse over 100 vendors at the Kansas Grow Farmers Market or explore 400-acre Sedgwick County Park, the city’s largest green space.
Sought-after historical revivals and cul-de-sacs lined with New Traditional dwellings
Barefoot Bay’s North Shore is where homebuyers will find 2-acre lots backing up to a sandy beach, often accompanied by boat slip, jet ski ramps and stone fire pits. “Houses here are custom-built with the intention of staying in the family for years, so they are incredibly hard to get,” says Golden. Whether it’s a sprawling French Eclectic or a Spanish Revival with a terracotta roof, dwellings here often have five bedrooms and three-car garages. The region south of the Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad has cul-de-sacs filled with four-bedroom New Traditional houses on 10,000-square-foot parcels. While the ponds here are only permitted for fishing, locals can walk its surrounding paved path or swim in the community pool along Garden Ridge Circle. Homes in the southern area typically start at $300,000, while homes on the North Shore can cost over $900,000.
Barefoot Bay is in the highly rated Maize Unified School District
Children here are in the Maize Unified School District, and every school on this area’s educational track has an A-minus grade from Niche. They may attend Maize South Elementary, continuing to Maize South Intermediate for fifth through sixth grade and Maize South Middle until eighth grade. Next, they can go to Maize South High School, which offers around 80 college credit courses thanks to its partnership with Wichita State University and Newman University. Classes include consumer finance, sports medicine and art appreciation.
Sedgwick County Park and the Reflection Ridge Golf Club are a quick walk away
Immediately south of the neighborhood, Sedgwick County Park is within walking distance. Visitors can wander the 4-mile sidewalk network surrounding four fishing lakes and an art park home to Kansas-inspired pieces, like bison statues and totem poles. Its remote-controlled car track is popular for young drivers, while animal lovers can view over 3,000 species at the Sedgwick County Zoo. The Great Plains Renaissance Festival is held here every spring, bringing turkey legs, jousting competitions and dragons to the green space. To the west, Reflection Ridge Golf Club and its 18-hole layout offer players a bent grass fairway and fescue roughs. Club members are also privy to amenities like the year-round tennis and pickleball courts or the swimming pool, which hosts youth swim meets and happy hours on Fridays throughout the summer.
Barefoot Bay is conveniently located along West 21st Street
With West 21st Street spanning its southern region, Barefoot Bay is near plenty of restaurant and retail options. From half-price martinis on Thursdays to live music every Friday, 6S has been a local go-go for its upscale atmosphere, local steak cuts and raw bar since 2018. Mexico Viejo is a pueblo-style, casual spot serving fruit-flavored margaritas and hearty burritos. Residents can easily walk to the Kansas Grown Wichita Farmers Market in the Sedgwick County Education Center parking lot every Saturday morning from April through October. A 3-mile drive west on the thoroughfare leads to NewMarket Square, Wichita’s largest open-air shopping center, home to grocers like Walmart Supercenter, Dillons and Sam’s Club.
Old Town and other Wichita destinations are nearby
While locals can stroll along the neighborhood’s sidewalks, Barefoot Bay is convenient for drivers. A 7-mile drive east on West 21st Street and Zoo Boulevard leads to the Old Town entertainment district. The Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is 5 miles away via North Ridge Road, and the Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa hospital is equidistant to the west. Bus riders will also find a few Wichita Transit stops sprinkled along West 21st Street and North Ridge Road.
