A north Wichita neighborhood with a cowtown past
Throughout the mid-1800s, Wichita’s Chisholm Creek area was trekked by cowboys and cattle traveling from Texas to Kansas. Today, much of the neighborhood remains the same, as 282-acre Chisholm Creek Park and its 2-and-a-half-mile trailway encompass preserved prairies and wetland terrain. “This is one of the biggest parks in Wichita,” says Bernardo Flores, the owner-broker of Fiesta Real Estate, who has sold multiple homes in the area. “It’s unique because it’s a massive nature preservation less than 15 miles outside the downtown area.” But despite its cowtown past, the neighborhood also has an element of modern convenience. Wichita State University is within walking distance, and Woodlawn Boulevard is covered in cozy eateries and grocery stores.
Chisholm Creek properties generally sit on sizable lots.

New Traditional dwellings and WSU student apartments
Chisholm Creek’s winding roads and cul-de-sacs are brimming with homes built throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. Vinyl-façade Craftsman houses sit on 10,000-square-foot lots with backyards enclosed by wood fences and front yards dotted with white dogwood trees. Split levels often have two-car garages, and neo-eclectic ranch styles can feature four to five bedrooms. Though the neighborhood is 56% renters, buying here costs anywhere between $250,000 and $400,000, a range similar to a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price. “Families live in the houses, but the apartments on 21st Street have a lot of college students because they can walk to class,” says Flores. Tall Oaks has one-bedroom units costing around $700 per month, and Brickstone at Woodlawn offers two bedrooms for $1,000.
Sidewalks conveniently run throughout the Chisholm Creek neighborhood.

Chisholm Creek Park offers 282 acres of trailways and green space
Chisholm Creek Park is north of 29th Street, and its path is accessible at the K-96 Trailhead off Oliver Street, offering two routes: a paved path for bike riders and a gravel one for hikers. Both paths feature a dense forest of Osage and oak trees and boardwalks stretching across wetland areas. Ponds along the way are stocked with crappie and largemouth bass, offering many grassy shorelines from which anglers can fish. Birdwatchers may spot great blue herons or wild turkeys; white-tailed deer are also frequently seen in the area. The trail ends at the Great Plains Nature Center, a midwestern wildlife educational hub featuring rotating live animal exhibits and a 2,200-gallon native fish aquarium. It also hosts numerous clubs, focused on topics like nature photography or wildflower gardening. From the Steve Clark YMCA on WSU’s campus to the Dennis Schoenebeck North YMCA on Woodlawn Avenue, Chisholm Creek is surrounded by indoor recreation opportunities.
