Sherwood Glen has highway convenience and a surprisingly suburban setting
Tucked between Interstate 235 and Kansas Route 96, Sherwood Glen is a north Wichita community with modern convenience and a midcentury suburban atmosphere. “It has a great reputation for being well-kept and quiet, which are traits hard to find in most Wichita neighborhoods this close to the highway,” says Jack Silvers, the owner-broker of River City Realty, who has sold homes in Wichita for over 40 years. The grassy median spanning North Woodrow Avenue is a popular walking spot. The neighborhood’s only sidewalk is along West 37th Street, leading to Sherwood Glen Park and a small pond, where residents can enjoy lunch at a picnic table or fish for largemouth bass. Though Sherwood Glen is predominantly residential, ample restaurants and retailers are only 3 miles south at the intersection of West 21st Street and Amidon Avenue.

Sherwood Glen has cul-de-sacs lined with midcentury architecture
Sherwood Glen’s winding roads and cul-de-sacs are lined with three-to-five-bedroom ranch styles built during the 1950s through the 70s. Contemporary styles with flat roofs sit on quarter-to-half-acre lots dotted with mature oak trees and enclosed by picket fences. Brick-façade Minimal Traditional homes have L-shaped layouts and two-car garages. The neighborhood's northeastern region has a few three-bedroom ranch-style and New Traditional duplexes. Buying here typically costs between $250,000 and $350,000, a range similar to a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price. “Nothing is on the market for over a month here,” says Silvers. “This area is slowly getting more popular because the houses have authentic midcentury architecture, but they need some interior updates.”

From a magnet elementary school to Wichita Heights High
Children can attend Earhart Environmental Magnet Elementary, graded a C-plus by Niche, continuing to C-minus-rated Pleasant Valley Middle. Then, they may go to C-plus-graded Wichita Heights High, which offers several career pathway programs, like business finance, graphic design and software development. The football field and baseball diamond along West 40th Street belong to Life Preparatory Academy, a private, Christian kindergarten through high school just 5 miles north on East 53rd Street.

Commercial options abound the intersection of West 21st Street and Amidon Avenue
Sherwood Glen is less than 3 miles from the intersection of West 21st Street and Amidon Avenue, where residents will find grocery stores like Walmart Neighborhood Market and Aldi. “The proximity to this shopping center is a huge plus,” says Silvers. “You aren’t close enough to where your neighborhood is busy because of it, but if you ever need something, it’s just a few minutes away.” Places like Starbucks and Taco Bell make the shopping center a fast-food hub, but there are also a few locally owned spots here. Bronx Pizza + Pints serves New York-style pies and locally sourced brews from its patio or casual interior. Japanese-style bowls made with garlic fried rice or stir-fried noodles are at Tiger Rice, a sleek eatery with a drive-through option. Other stores like Old Navy or Target are only 8 miles west at NewMarket Square, the city’s largest open-air shopping center.
Residents enjoy a namesake playground and proximity to Sedgwick County Park
Located outside the Adult Day Services at Catholic Charities campus, Sherwood Glen Park features a playground with rope-climbing structures and a basketball half-court. Outdoor music equipment and a splash pad can also be found here, though these amenities are meant only for adults who are a part of the organization. Kayakers and canoers will find a boat launch less than 4 miles south at Big Arkansas River Park off West 21st Street. A 6-mile drive south on Interstate 235 leads to Sedgwick County Park, Wichita’s largest green space. Its 400 acres are filled with a 4-mile sidewalk network surrounding four fishing ponds, several playgrounds and an art park, home to a turtle-shaped maze and Native American carvings. The Sedgwick County Zoo here has daily giraffe feedings, safari boat rides and a stingray cove.
