Competitively priced homes in a tranquil suburban setting
Between the construction of Cessna Aircraft Field and McConnell Air Force Base during World War Two, “Southeast Wichita was built for enlisted,” says Jack Silvers, owner and broker of River City Realty, who has been a Realtor for the past 44 years and a resident of Wichita for the past 70 years. From the multiple public airports to Spirit Aerosystems Inc., “Wichita is an aircraft town,” says Silvers. But in Southeast Wichita today, there are “a lot of people who have lived here for 50 years, and also young people,” says Silvers. “And the farther east you go, the newer it gets. East of Rock Road, it gets slightly more affluent.”
Blend of residential and rural
The streets of Southeast Wichita are wide with streetlights and spotted with medium-sized trees. The top half of the area is residential and commercial; it gets more rural further to the southeast. There are many new constructions in this growing area. Ranch-style single-family homes – the smallest being a three-bed/two-bath – fall in the $200,000s. There is no shortage of brand new, contemporary duplexes: each side has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a two-car garage, totaling to $375,000 for the full duplex. Apartments are clustered just to the west of W.B. Harrison Park; competitive rates range from $532 for a studio to $875 for a two-bedroom.

Outdoor recreation
When it comes to outdoor recreation, Sierra Hills Golf Club offers 18 holes, a putting green and a driving range. W.B. Harrison Park includes a splash pad, rugby fields and tennis courts, and plans to reopen its dog park in the spring of 2024. Some subdivisions also have pools and playgrounds.

Wichita events
Beyond Southeast Wichita, “city-wide, there are a number of things that bring people together, like the Tall Grass Film Festival, Wichita River Festival and the annual Chili Cookoff,” says Silvers. “Plus, the baseball stadium recently got a $90 million dollar renovation. Downtown, there are some entertainment districts, which attract young people.”
School options for the area's learners
Southeast Wichita students may attend Wichita Public School 259 District. According to Niche, Seltzer Elementary gets a B-minus overall grade and is the No. 1 Most Diverse Public Elementary School in Kansas. Curtis Middle gets a C-minus from Niche and has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Wichita Southeast High School gets a C-plus from Niche. Its College and Career Center helps students plan for post-graduation life, whether they set their sights on college, the workforce or the military. The Center also helps students apply for internships and foster connections with community professionals.
Important to Know
Between Beech Factory Airport, Cessna Airfield and McConnell Air Force Base, Southeast Wichita has historically been a magnet for folks in the aviation industry – and still is. “But when Cessna built a bigger plant in southwest Wichita, some folks in the aircraft industry moved to the west,” says Silvers. Still, the convenience of Southeast Wichita is a draw for many. The Southeast Wichita Family MedCenter is about three miles away. Whether residents move here for proximity to the Air Force base or to downtown, Southeast Wichita offers competitively priced homes in a tranquil yet growing suburban setting.
