From airports to soda plants, Southwest Village is a hub of industry
Immediately east of Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Southwest Village combines residential amenities with industrial convenience. The neighborhood is home to a variety of factories, ranging from the Heartland Coca-Cola bottling plant to local construction firms. A hub for crop dusters and other small planes, Westport Airport-71K is also at the community’s core. “This is an area where people live and work,” says Bernardo Flores, the owner-broker of Fiesta Real Estate, who has sold several homes in the area. “You will get some noise from the airports, but traffic doesn’t really affect the area if you aren’t on the highway.” Meridian Avenue is covered in chain eateries and community hubs, like Wichita’s largest public library and a YMCA branch. Locals also enjoy easy access to Interstate 235, making some of Wichita’s most popular destinations, like Old Town, less than 10 miles away.
Many of the Southwest Village homes have two-car garages.
Midcentury homes and mobile home parks
Developed throughout the midcentury, Southwest Village’s residential streets are in the southeastern region. Sprawling ranch styles can have three bedrooms and brick facades, while L-shaped options often feature two-car garages. Split-level dwellings can also sit on 2,000-square-foot lots enclosed by chain link fences. Buying here typically costs between $150,000 and $200,000, a range lower than a Wichita home’s average $250,000 selling price. “These houses are actually known for their good quality, despite how low the prices can be,” says Flores. “Places can easily sell within a month here.” In the neighborhood’s western region, communities like Lakeside Landing and Fishin’ Mobile Home Park offer private fishing and boating access at their respective lakes and manufactured homes available to purchase or rent.
Southwest Village is home to Wichita’s largest public library and YMCA branch
Spanning 9 acres, Wildwood Park is a small green space in the neighborhood, offering a half-mile trail surrounding a playground and basketball court. The 20-acre Osage Park is just 2 miles east of the neighborhood, where locals can find pickleball courts and a splash pad open throughout the summer. Located off Meridian Avenue is the Wichita Public Library’s largest facility, the Alford Branch. “The building was made to look like a plane because of all the aircraft manufacturing we do in Wichita,” says Flores. It hosts numerous community events, from sessions on how to play Dungeons & Dragons to weekly family story times. On the same thoroughfare, the Richard A. DeVore South YMCA has a fitness center and indoor swimming pool with lap lanes. The outdoor waterpark features twisty slides and diving boards, while the detached sports facility hosts numerous youth leagues playing indoor soccer or basketball.

Meridian Avenue is home to an Irish pub and retro rollerblading rink
Meridian Avenue in the neighborhood’s eastern region is lined with chain restaurants like Taco Bell and Village Inn, a fast-casual breakfast spot. O’Malley’s Irish Pub is a local option with over 24 beers on tap and a kitchen serving chicken wings and Shepard's pie until 1 a.m. Patrons can also sing in the karaoke room, where they may see the occasional bagpipe bands. Next door, Roller City offers disco-themed rollerblading sessions every Wednesday on Retro Night. The Walmart Neighborhood Market and Dillons along West 31st Street are the nearest grocery store options, less than 3 miles east. Other retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Dillard’s are 3 miles north in Towne West Square, a mall with around 50 stores.
Easy access to Interstate 235 makes Southwest Village a car-dependent community
Southwest Village’s residential streets do not have sidewalks, making it a car-dependent community. Interstate 235 spans Southwest Village’s western region, and a 9-mile drive northeast on the highway and U.S. Route 400 leads to Wichita’s Old Town entertainment district. A 10-mile drive south on I-235 leads to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph, the neighborhood’s nearest hospital. Bus riders will find a Wichita Transit stop every two blocks along Meridian Avenue.

The price of housing and utilities are cheap. The houses are a bit older, but they are well maintained. There is no vandalism or graffiti, and there are no abandoned properties.

The nightlife in my neighborhood is nonexistent, and there are only fast food restaurants here. If my family and I want to eat at a high quality restaurant, we must drive to northeast or northwest Wichita.
