Preserved 1800s estates showcase Williamsport’s past
Once a beacon of the wealth generated by Williamsport’s booming lumber industry in the late 1800s, Millionaire’s Row Historic District showcases extravagant Victorian houses along West 4th Street. The larger historic district also includes churches, museums and modest homes that capture life in Williamsport for both the rich lumber barons and their employees in the 19th century. And though many of the mansions now serve as rental homes for students attending the nearby Pennsylvania College of Technology, locals are dedicated to upholding the district’s history. Preservation Williamsport is a non-profit organization that has invested in fixing up these historic homes and maintaining their stately appearance. “You’ve got the good, the bad and the ugly in any historic district. But it’s fair to say that, whether you’re buying [a home] as a rental or a single-family dwelling, there’s a respect for the historic district,” says Bob Kane, former member of Williamsport’s Historic Architectural Review Board and Rowley House Museum curator.

Victorian mansions and historic apartments along 4th Street
Shade trees line the loosely gridded streets with sidewalks of Millionaire’s Row Historic District. Large homes have small front and back yards, with each house’s footprint taking up most of the lot. “Millionaire’s Row” is a subset of the larger historic district and is along West 4th Street. The most opulent homes were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and span over 5,000 square feet. The neighborhood’s mansions are “all Victorian houses in different substyles,” Kane says. These include Queen Anne, Italianate Villa, Colonial Revival and French Second Empire styles. Each mansion is unique: some feature castle-like brick exteriors, while others are stucco or wood. Common exterior features include front porches with ornate columns, pointed towers, multiple chimneys and slate roofs. These homes sell today for between $200,000 and $500,000.
The Weightman Building, also on West 4th Street, is an imposing brick apartment complex developed by prominent developer Peter Herdic in the 1870s. The rest of the official historic district spans several more streets. “We included not only the millionaire houses, but the working class, modest homes, which make it a bit more interesting,” Kane says. Modest homes in the neighborhood include American Foursquares and colonials with about 1,500 square feet of living space priced between $70,000 and $100,000. The architectural board must approve exterior changes to historic homes, including historic paint colors. “We have approved color schemes that are Victorian-era colors. Each paint company has a palette of historic colors,” Kane says.

Fine dining at the Peter Herdic House
The Peter Herdic House Restaurant offers fine dining on 4th Street. Diners enjoy entrees like filet mignon and wild Alaskan salmon inside the Italianate Villa with a pink stucco exterior. White linens cover tables surrounded by plush chairs, and rooms inside are painted with historically accurate colors. Details like ornate crown molding, arched windows with heavy drapes and chandeliers contribute to the elegant atmosphere. “We used to have our Christmas party there every year,” says Dawn Dyer, Williamsport native and Realtor at Iron Valley Real Estate. “It’s a really limited menu. They do duck, lobster bisque, bison – things you don’t see on a regular restaurant’s menu.” More casual restaurants are just down the street, including Shamrock Grille. Here, residents can slide into a booth and grab a sub sandwich and a pint. Backhouse Cafe serves pastries and coffee in a circa-1890 Victorian Queen Anne mansion. Wegmans has groceries on William Street just outside the neighborhood.

Victorian Christmas and museums on 4th Street
Locals can explore Williamsport’s history as a major lumber hub at the Thomas T. Taber Museum on 4th Street or learn more about how millionaires of the 19th century lived at the Rowley House Museum. The Rowley House is a preserved circa-1888 Queen Ann home with patinaed trim, dormer windows and red brick inlaid with tile. The historic home is also just across the Street from St. Joseph the Worker Parish, a Roman Catholic church built in 1886 with stained glass windows spanning multiple stories and depicting Biblical scenes. Each year in November, Preservation Williamsport hosts the “Victorian Christmas” event. Attendees tour historic buildings along 4th Street, guided by dedicated locals dressed in period garb. The Victorian Christmas event also includes a craft fair with local artists.

Susquehanna River Walk and Flanigan Park
Residents can walk among the blooming flowers of Ways Garden Park, a small green space just across the Street from Trinity Episcopal Church in the neighborhood. The Susquehanna River Walk just south of the district follows the river, offering views of the water and gently rolling, forested Allegheny Mountains in the distance. Flanigan Park, just north of the historic district off Campbell Street, has a baseball diamond, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and a playground. Firetree Place is a community center at the park offering before- and after-school care and summer camps; youth sports including little league baseball, football and cheerleading; and outreach programs like a food bank for lower-income households.

Flooding in the historic district and getting around Williamsport
The historic district is in a flood zone. According to Kane, flooding was among the reasons wealthier Williamsport residents eventually moved to neighborhoods further north, such as Vallamont, through the early 1900s. Today, Williamsport’s levees help mitigate flooding in the area. Millionaire’s Row is within walking distance of the Pennsylvania College of Technology, which has about 4,000 students. Students can also ride to campus and around town on River Valley Transit Authority buses, which have stops along 4th Street, Edwin Street and other roads going through the district. Drivers connect across the state on Interstate 180, which runs through Williamsport just south of the neighborhood. The closest hospital is UPMC Williamsport, about half a mile north. Williamsport Regional Airport is 6 miles east.

Students attend the Williamsport Area School District
Kids living in the neighborhood often attend Cochran Primary School for kindergarten through third grade and Curtin Intermediate School for fourth through sixth grade. They progress to Williamsport Area Middle School for seventh and eighth grade. All three schools earn B-minus grades from Niche. Older students in the town attend Williamsport Area Senior High School, which has a B-plus. The high school enrolls just over 1,500 students. Juniors and seniors at the high school can enroll in Penn College Now, a dual enrollment program where students can take college-level courses with teachers approved by Penn College.
