Williamsport's first housing development still popular today
Before it became Williamsport's first planned housing development, Vallamont was, over the years, the site of Packer Farm, Camp Maloney military encampment and the Vallamont Planing Mill. Developer James B. Krause helped purchase and plat the land in 1890 as Williamsport's first suburb. Developers chose Vallamont's location strategically for its hilly terrain that naturally protected against flooding. "There's a progression of money and millionaires from building houses in the [Millionaire's Row] Historic District, which was a flood zone, to building mansions on a hill called Bellmont (in Vallamont)," says Bob Kane, former member of Williamsport's Historic Architectural Review Board and Vallamont resident. Vallamont quickly became popular among Williamsport's wealthy class, and the neighborhood is still one of Williamsport's most desirable neighborhoods.

20th century mansions and more modest properties
Homes in Vallamont feature a variety of styles from the early 20th century, including American Foursquares, Tudor Revivals and Colonial Revivals. "It's not officially a historic district, but many of the homes fall into that category," says Tracy Knoebel, Realtor at KW Advantage Williamsport and Williamsport native. Although most homes hover around 2,000 square feet of living space and cost between $200,000 and $400,000, a handful of mansions spanning between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet cost between $500,000 and $900,000. Knoebel explains that more extravagant properties sit on acres of land and feature unique details. "You have midcentury houses with curved lines, old Tudors, and all-brick houses with turrets for the staircase along the side," she says. The neighborhood's western side has homes tucked away in the woods on winding streets. These houses on Vallamont Drive, Ravine Road and Graham Road are largely split levels and brick ranches valued between $200,000 and $400,000, though some original mansions also line these streets. The Williamsport Home is a retirement community off Ravine Road.

The history of Vallamont Park and Brandon Park
Over a century ago, the neighborhood had its own park, Vallamont Park, between Campbell Street and Walnut Street along Belmont Avenue. It featured a merry-go-round, amphitheater and bandstand where concerts were held. However, the park was cleared in 1919 to construct more homes. Homes on the site now represent some of the largest and most expensive properties in Williamsport. Today, residents can visit nearby parks like Brandon Park for outdoor recreation. Brandon Park has paved walking trails among flower beds and cherry trees that bloom in the spring, a Little League baseball field, tennis courts and a bandshell. Neighborhood children can also get their energy out at Kids United Community Playground. Adjacent to Vallamont is Wildwood Cemetery, founded in 1863 and still in use today.
Brandon Park Bandshell and the Little League World Series
Locals can attend events at the Brandon Park Bandshell. Opened in 1914 and refurbished in 2024, the bandshell is the location for popular annual events such as the Festival of Lights in early December. Families come out to this event to watch the Christmas tree lighting, sit on Santa's lap and listen to live music. The park also hosts an annual summer concert series at the bandshell. Each year in August brings the Little League World Series, 2 miles south in South Williamsport. The area comes alive with hundreds of thousands of fans to watch youth baseball teams from around the world compete for the championship title.
Parents enjoy watching their kids play baseball on the beautiful field at Brandon Park.
