Transitioning from country to suburbia
Pleasant Grove is a growing community about 30 miles south of Raleigh. It comprises a stretch of land between the small town of Angier and the unincorporated community of McGee’s Crossroads, one of the most rapidly expanding areas in the region outside of Raleigh proper. “This area has traditionally been farmland, very agricultural, but it’s shifting into more of a residential area,” says Realtor Mike Sanders, with Re/Max United. Raleigh’s increasing presence on national “best places to live” lists, combined with the ever-growing employment opportunities in Research Triangle Park, have led to an uptick in transplants to this up-and-coming bedroom community. “This area is quieter, out and away from the hustle and bustle of Raleigh and other nearby towns like Fuquay-Varina,” says Realtor Joshua Vick of Team Anderson Realty. He says Pleasant Grove’s appeal boils down to three things. “It’s still got a country vibe, but it’s not too far from ‘in town’ and the schools are really good. It’s just quiet and safe. Sometimes, that’s all you need.”
Pleasant Grove features a number of well supported local farm markets.

Traditional homes galore
Most homes in Pleasant Grove are Traditional in style, whether they were built three decades ago or last year. Older homes tend to feature Colonial Revival-inspired details, such as fluted columns and wraparound porches, while new construction tends to lean toward Modern Farmhouse or Craftsman-influenced details. “There’s a good mixture of all kinds of homes,” says Vick. “There’s a good collection of ‘90s homes and a good amount of new construction, in no one particular style.” Prices start at around $300,000 and can go up to more than $550,000, a range largely determined by age and lot size. Vick says half-acre lots are common around here, noting that it’s part of Pleasant Grove’s appeal.

Johnston County Public Schools' multiple pathways
The exact path Pleasant Grove kids take for their grade school careers varies based on their address, so parents are advised to check the boundary maps ahead of registration. Broadly, kids living on the north side of the neighborhood go to Dixon Road Elementary and McGee’s Crossroads Middle. Dixon Road receives a B from Niche; McGee’s Crossroads Middle gets a B-minus. If they live on the south side, they usually go to Benson Elementary and Benson Middle, both of which get C-plusses from Niche. Students living in the heart of Pleasant Grove tend to go to McGee’s Crossroads Elementary and McGee’s Crossroads Middle. McGee’s Crossroads Elementary gets a B. Regardless of the elementary and middle school paths they take, students here attend West Johnston High, which gets a B-minus from Niche. The high school offers an Army JROTC program, as well as courses in subjects ranging from digital media to medical science.

NC Highway 210 and Interstate 40
North Carolina Highway 210 runs east-west through the middle of Pleasant Grove. The two-lane main thoroughfare is flanked by groves of pine trees and new residential developments along much of its length, connecting east toward Smithfield and west toward Angier. The nearly 30-mile commute north into Raleigh takes about 30 minutes via Interstate 40, which runs north-south through the neighborhood’s east side. Vick notes that the 30-minute commute to Raleigh is paramount here. “There’s not a lot in terms of employment around here. Most people commute elsewhere for work,” he says. Research Triangle Park, a major regional employment hub, is farther north than Raleigh. The nearly 43-mile drive takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
Quick access to the interstate allows Pleasant Grove residents to travel the area easily.

Small-town shopping and dining
Residents can pick up fresh produce at local farm shops. Porter Farms & Nursery Farm Market offers seasonal produce in the summer months, as well as pick-your-own strawberries in the spring, or pumpkins and colorful chrysanthemums in the fall. The shop at Hand Picked Nursery features a wide variety of plants indigenous to the Carolinas and an outdoor gathering space complete with an oversized chess set, food trucks and goats for visitors to pet. The nursery also collaborates with other local businesses to host events. Recently, they teamed up with SIT Leather & Saddlery for a leather working workshop. “Because it’s a newer residential area, there aren’t as many amenities as far as shopping, dining, and retail right in the community yet,” says Sanders. Vick agrees, adding that most locals head over to Fuquay-Varina for their weekly grocery haul and big box-style retailers. Walmart Supercenter, Aldi, Harris Teeter, Home Depot and Tractor Supply are all within about 14 miles of home, on the north side of the nearby small town. Vick says there’s a vibrant dining scene there, too. One of his personal favorite eateries is The Library Steakhouse, which serves up elevated Southern fare.
