Suburban Neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware
New Castle County 19803, 19810
The tallies roll in when you count the perks of living in Talleyville – an established and coveted North Wilmington suburb. With abundant shopping, nature preserves, and proximity to far-reaching highways, the list goes on. "Commuters particularly enjoy the area's accessibility to major cities Like Philadelphia," says Associate Broker David Beaver from the Mottola Group of Compass Real Estate. "They don't have to be directly in the city and can avoid the expensive property taxes." Beaver has worked in the area for about 8 years.
Talleyville streets are a mix of high-traffic roadways and woodsy suburban backroads. Beyond six-lane commuter strips are sidewalk-lined, calm streets that meet manicured lawns and towering trees. Each quarter-acre property has a spacious split-level, colonial or ranch-style home from the 1960s and '70s. Homes boast between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet with at least three bedrooms. Several residents have wide front porches adorned with rocking chairs and hanging plants.
Students attend schools under the Brandywine School District, which Niche ranked in the top five best school districts in Delaware and gave an overall A-minus. Children kickstart their education at Hanby Elementary School – home of the Honeybees. Niche gave Hanby an overall B-plus and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Students progress to Springer Middle School, where they can join various clubs, like jazz band, homework club and Rapid Readers. Springer also sports a B-plus on Niche. Students advance to Concord High School to earn their diplomas. Concord is above average in measures of college preparation, according to GreatSchools, and earned an overall A-minus from Niche.
"The Talleyville area is intersected by Route 202, which evenly separates the west and east sides," Beaver says. "The west side has more parks and lends itself to nature, and the east side is where retail centers and most homes are." On Talleyville's western end is the Brandywine Creek State Park. Close to 1,000 acres, the state park features four nature preserves and over 14 miles of hiking trails. You'll find picturesque meadows with wildflowers, lively wildlife like deer and chipmunks and the trickling streams of Brandywine Creek. Local athletes head to Bonsall Park to enjoy tennis, basketball, baseball and other recreational sports. While a popular park for sporting activities, Bonsall features a playground for the kids and ample green space for your furry friends to roam.
On the east side, Talleyville is a booming center of retail and commerce. Shopping centers, malls, and various stand-alone big-box stores run up and down Route 202. Locals frequent Concord Square to grab groceries at Giant, shop at Marshalls or get in their workout at Planet Fitness. Head to Taverna Rustic Italian for a night out. Taverna boasts tasty coal-fired pizzas and nightly specials like homemade lasagna and baked rigatoni with meatballs. If you're craving Mexican, next door is El Camino Mexican Kitchen, where you'll find classic Mexican favorites and cold margaritas.
Talleyville's proximity to big highways lends itself to being a commuter community. Route 202 runs through the neighborhood's heart, leading you toward Southern Delaware. Only a few miles east is an access point to Interstate 95, which leads to Philadelphia in the north and Baltimore in the southwest. For those needing public transportation, the DART transit system passes through Talleyville. Residents commonly ride route 2 of the bus system, which travels up and down Concord Pike. Other modes of transportation can be found at Brandywine Bikes. The bike shop is not only a great spot to purchase a fresh set of wheels but also offers an opportunity to meet other community members through various bike clubs and local group rides. Groups often ride bikes at Brandywine Creek State Park which features a winding system of trails. Many bike events, like the Wilmington Grand Prix and the Dirty Grin Mountain Bike Festival, bring the community together with food and music. You can also check out the Brandywine Festival of the Arts – a Wilmington-wide, cherished annual event. With over 15,000 visitors, the arts festival is a booming celebration of artists of various mediums with a combined mix of live music, games, activities and food.
Talleyville is the beating heart of Northern Wilmington, affording shopping, parks and deep-rooted housing. Let the tally marks roll in on the pros of this sought-after suburb.
