Residential roads surrounded by foliage
Near the Pine Valley area of Wilmington, Holly Tree Road winds through a residential area known as Holly Tree. The neighborhood has multiple communities, from single-family homes and townhouses to cottages and senior living apartments. Holly Tree also gets its name from the nearby elementary school and tennis club. It’s close to the Masonboro suburb, a growing section of the city. “Holly Tree is the unofficial entrance if you’re coming into Masonboro towards Beasley Road,” says Sean Skutnik, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty, who has lived in Wilmington since the late 1980s. Surrounded by dense foliage, Holly Tree feels removed from the busy highway and shopping center to its west.
Separate subdivisions in a similar style
Most single-family homes in the area tend to be Craftsmans with one- or two-car garages built in the early 2000s. Homes sit close together on sidewalk-lined streets, usually ending in cul-de-sacs. Some homes in the area are not a part of homeowners associations, while some subdivisions have their own homeowners associations, including The Holly Glen Estates and The Cottages at Holly Glen. Prices in Holly Tree start at $435,000 and can go as high as $740,000, depending on square footage. The Townhomes at Holly Glen range from $230,000 to $440,000. The Woods at Holly Tree is an all-inclusive senior living community located in the neighborhood.
Many of the newer homes in Holly Tree have small yards and sit close together.

A convenient location off of a busy road
Holly Tree Road is located off of North Carolina Highway 132, which runs along College Road. Most residents rely on cars as their main source of transportation, but there is a Wave Transit bus stop outside the neighborhood along College Road. Sidewalks along Holly Tree Road end towards College Road, and crosswalks are not clearly defined, so walking outside of the neighborhood isn’t very safe. “They do have plans on bolstering the public transportation here,” says Jan Roggeman, a Realtor with 1st Class Real Estate Coastal Choice who has lived in Wilmington for 10 years. “That’s going to come along with all of different road projects that are happening.” The 8- to 10-mile drive to Wilmington International Airport will take around 20 minutes. A drive to the Wilmington Downtown Riverwalk will take about 6 miles, while a trip to Wrightsville Beach will take around 7 miles in the opposite direction.
Holly Tree residents have access to the WAVE buy system along College Road.
Arrondale residents are only a short drive from the Wilmington Riverwalk.

A match at the Holly Tree Racquet & Swim Club
Residents can use the tennis courts and pool with a Holly Tree Racquet & Swim Club membership. They offer tennis clinics for all ages, and kids can join the Holly Tree Piranhas swim team. When the private club went on the market in early 2024, members created a petition for the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County to purchase the club. The fate of the club is currently unknown. The Lower Cape Fear YWCA also has a pool and health and wellness programs for women of all ages. Masonboro Island is only accessible by boat. “It’s a barrier island off of the coast that’s in between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach,” Roggeman says. “It’s uninhabited, but definitely a popular spot for locals to go out on their boats, go to that barrier reef island and surf.” Pine Valley Country Club and Long Leaf Park are within a few miles of Holly Tree.

Local eateries and shopping at Independence Mall
Gabe’s, Big Lots and Harris Teeter are the main stores that form Long Leaf Mall. “It’s an outdoor Strip mall,” Roggeman says. “It’s not a shopping destination, but it’s good for a quick errand.” On the other side of the parking lot is C Street Mexican Grill. The locally owned and operated restaurant opened in 2020 and serves tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Residents can find eateries along College Road, including Tandoori Bites and Jimbo’s Breakfast & Lunch. Independence Mall, Wilmington's only enclosed shopping mall, offers a mix of clothing stores, restaurants and small businesses.
The C Street Mexican Grill is a Holly Tree favorite for tacos and burritos.
