Wilmington suburb with access to the beach, Mayfaire and Cross City Trail

Windemere is a quaint suburb blossoming off Eastwood Road in Wilmington, where residents here have convenient access to the Cross City Trail for citywide pedestrian access or the regionally loved Wrightsville Beach for fishing and swimming in the summer. “There’s close proximity to Wrightsville Beach, and Mayfaire is a shopping hub right next door, says Eva Elmore, a Wilmington local and real estate broker with Intracoastal Realty. “It’s also close to the university, so there are all kinds of people living here, including professionals and families.” Windemere is neighbors with Mayfaire Town Center, a thriving mall with dozens of name-brand retailers. Buyers can also choose between established single-family homes or one of several townhouse subdivisions within the neighborhood.

Locals bike Cross City Trail, see flora at Airlie Gardens and swim at Wrightsville Beach

Cross City Trail runs parallel to Eastwood Road and runs 15 miles from South Wilmington to the drawbridge at Wrightsville Beach for cyclists and hikers. “Some ride to the beach, but the trail also cuts through Wilmington for people who want to explore through other neighborhoods,” says Elmore. A couple of miles east is Airlie Gardens, a 67-acre public botanical garden featuring a native butterfly house, walking trails through live oaks and a massive willow tree, and art sculptures. Less than five miles east is Wrightsville Beach, where it’s popular to search for seashells, sunbathe or swim. The beach may get crowded in the summer, as it’s a popular tourist destination in the Cape Fear region.

Established postwar homes and newer townhouses at Inland Greens

Homes range in price from $350,000 to $800,000, varying by age and square footage. “It’s an older neighborhood with larger lots, and a lot of homes now are getting renovated, as they were built in the ‘70s and ‘80s,” says Elmore. “Prices here are pretty good and fairly affordable for the city.” Streets are neat and grid-patterned, though there aren’t many residential sidewalks since lawns tend to be large. Styles include Postwar brick split levels and ramblers, and several townhouse subdivisions, like Inland Greens, offer three-bedroom options around the $400,000 mark.
