Community-oriented riverside living in downtown Winooski
Located north of Burlington in Chittenden County, Winooski is a small riverside city with quiet residential neighborhoods and quirky shops and restaurants on Main Street. The city gets its name from the Abenaki word “Winoskitegw,” meaning “land of the wild onion,” for the leeks and onions that once grew along the banks of the Winooski River. That’s why Winooski is known affectionately as Onion City. "Winooski is the most densely populated and diverse community in Northern New England," says Melissa Corbin, the executive director of the nonprofit Downtown Winooski and an area local for the last 25 years. She currently lives in Essex. "We're a refugee resettlement community, so we have people from all over the world who live here.” Downtown Winooski thrives on its locally owned businesses and breweries, riverside paths and community gatherings at Rotary Park.
A classic lineup of Main Street breweries, shops and eateries
Downtown Winooski benefits from an assortment of shops and restaurants, including gastropubs and breweries like Four Quarters Brewing and the Mule Bar. “We have a lot of microbreweries around and people really do enjoy the brews,” says Karen Bresnahan, a Vermont local since 1990. She is a Realtor with Four Seasons Sotheby's International Realty and has been selling real estate in Vermont for over 13 years. “Many of these breweries and some of the distilleries are also tapping into spirits and offering different types of hard cider from local orchards.” Scout Winooski cafe is great for bringing a laptop or a book and sipping a fresh latte. Onion City Chicken & Oyster serves fried and fresh seafood, while Misery Loves Co. market sells a variety of products, many sourced from local farms. For big grocery trips, drivers can head about 1 mile north on Main Street to reach Shaw’s grocery store and the local Walgreens.
Downtown Winooski’s annual festivals and fun for all
Probably the best part of living in Downtown Winooski is having access to all the community events that are hosted at Rotary Park in the center of town. Around Halloween, people can walk to the park and view over 1,000 pumpkins. This tradition has been going on for over 20 years, where carvers include members of the Winooski Senior Center, volunteers, kids and neighbors. The Winooski Farmers Market takes place at the Champlain Mill building on Winooski Falls Way, where vendors, musicians and shoppers can gather weekly from May through October. The area’s French Heritage Day celebrates Vermont and Que´becois history and culture, and local historians and residents gather to enjoy traditional cuisine, a baking contest and live music. True to its name, Winooski also hosts an annual Onion Festival in October. Winooski Wednesdays in the summertime are packed full of kids’ activities and musical acts, while in December, the area’s Holiday Pop-up Shop features over 60 small business vendors.
Riverfront views and Rotary Park events
Winooski River’s waterfront winds through the landscape with rapids, small islands and fishing holes for locals to explore. "We have a lot of wonderful parks in our community and an absolutely fantastic community pool," Corbin says. Winooski Falls Park is more of a boardwalk, where anglers take their fishing poles to spend a day looking for bass and walleye. The Winooski River Walk begins at the Winooski Falls rapids and stretches east through the forests until ending at the train track bridge by the reservoir. Though the river is beautiful to look at, the nearby water and sewage treatment plants can give off a distinct smell to those nearby.
Infrastructure improvements and a diverse population
Construction is a current challenge in the area, which may impact business sales and transportation into Winooski. "We're only a couple of months into the six years of infrastructure construction we are facing," Corbin says. "We're trying to figure out how to keep people coming into town and how to keep our businesses open during construction. The bridge that leads in from Burlington sees 25,000 cars every single day, so when it's cut off for repairs, we may see a dip in traffic for as few as six weeks or as many as 20." The median age of Winooski residents is about 31, so many young families live in the area, but it also has a vibrant senior citizen population. As a refugee resettlement community, the town has embraced many different cultures. “When people first started immigrating to Winooski, we didn’t have all of the necessary infrastructure to support them; we didn't speak the languages," Corbin says. "But now we are so vibrant! We have translators at our schools and throughout the community. We are really starting to understand their cultures, what their needs are and how best to address them.”
Condos overlooking the Winooski River
Though Winooski is a quiet, residential city, the downtown area is made up of apartment buildings, large homes that were turned into multi-family rental units and condominiums. The luxury units at Cascades Riverfront condos can overlook the water or the city, with one to two-bedroom floor plans listed between $400,000 and $600,000. Other locations, like the Millyard Condos building, may cost closer to $350,000. Only a few single-family New England-style homes with varying Victorian-inspired facades, gabled roofs or columned front porches are still available, often listed at prices between $375,000 and $550,000. Though the cost of living in Vermont is high, "we're really scrappy, nontraditional," Corbin says. "It's an idyllic place to live. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but you really do have to do the math before you move to Vermont – and you have to be prepared for the weather!"
Winooski Public School programs and achievements
Students in Winooski all study within the same large building on Normand Street north of downtown, which houses three different schools inside. J.F. Kennedy Elementary School and Winooski Middle School emphasize inclusivity and cultural acceptance. Many students come from families that arrived through the International Refugee Resettlement Program. "Our school district is incredible and diverse... Officially, we have 14 languages that are spoken, but 30 are spoken throughout the city," Corbin says. Both schools are graded a C-minus on Niche. Winooski High rates a C and is supported by the Winooski/Burlington Partnership for Change initiative, which aims to remodel all Winooski schools’ curriculums to reflect a more modern, community-driven model.
Traveling to and from Downtown Winooski
Downtown Winooski is just across the river from downtown Burlington, which is a little less than 3 miles south. "It's a very small town, everybody knows everybody, but we're also open to all new people," Corbin says. "We help each other out... it's overall got a really safe community feel here. You generally feel safe walking alone at night." Drivers can take Main Street to reach the city center and enjoy all the festivals, museums, parks, and waterfront views that it provides. For weekends away, Burlington International Airport is about 3 miles southeast of Winooski via Grove Street. The University of Vermont’s main campus and medical center are only 1 mile south via Colchester Avenue. For getting around in Winooski, Green Mountain Transit bus stops are located all throughout downtown, taking passengers north through Winooski or south to Burlington.
