Quiet, convenient living west of downtown
Country Club’s proximity to its namesake, the century-old Forsyth Country Club, is just a bonus for many homebuyers. The community’s main draw is its location, minutes west of downtown Winston-Salem and close to major shopping and dining destinations along U.S. Routes 421 and 158. “You’re right off Country Club Road and a couple of highways, so there are businesses all around,” says Realtor Tracy Shumack of Shumack Realty, who has more than 10 years of experience working with clients buying and selling homes in the area. “But at the same time, the homes are tucked back well away from the busy roads, and it’s very family-oriented, with a neighborhood park around the corner and the elementary school down the road.” Encore Realty Partners Realtor John Cain, who has worked in the local real estate market for more than two decades, adds that homebuyers are also drawn to Country Club for its unique, oversized lots. “Homes in this area feel very spread out. In general, it feels more spacious than a lot of other Winston-Salem neighborhoods.”

An eclectic mix of 1950s-1990s home styles
Country Club homes come in a wide range of architectural styles and prices. Classic midcentury ranch-style homes, late-20th century split-levels and Colonial Revivals can sell for anywhere from $150,000 to more than $500,000, depending on square footage and condition. But there are a few vintage homes in the neighborhood that date back to the 1920s. One, a Georgian Revival built in 1924, was recently listed for more than $2 million. Another outlier, a French Provincial-inspired home built in 2003, was listed at close to $4 million. “Country Club is an older, more established neighborhood,” Shumack says. “It’s not one of those developments where everybody had to have a 2,400-or-more-square-foot house. Most of these homes were built back in the ‘60s, and a couple are older than that, but they were built at a time when you could put a 1,200-square-foot house next to a 3,000-square-foot house." She explains that the variety is part of the neighborhood’s appeal, but that it can also mean homes here are difficult to price. “They’re just all so different, it's hard to find real comps.”

Private Forsyth Country Club and public playgrounds nearby
Forsyth Country Club is just across Country Club Road, within a mile of most homes in the neighborhood. “It’s one of the really big country clubs in town,” Shumack says, adding that membership is not exclusive to the surrounding Country Club community. Members enjoy access to the club’s 18-hole Donald Ross-designed golf course, as well as a clubhouse, a gym, tennis courts and a heated outdoor pool. The pool is home to the Forsyth Country Club Crazy Ducks swim team, which practices and hosts meets there between May and July every summer. The Crazy Ducks are part of the Greater Forsyth Swim League; non-club members are welcome to participate. Shaffner Park features a public playground and several sports facilities around the corner. And just a few blocks away, Hathaway Park offers plenty of public recreation, including a castle-themed playground, a seasonal splash pad, a tennis court and a baseball/softball field. There’s another public playground at Miller Park, along with bocce courts and horseshoe pits, located just south of Country Club in Ardmore.

Close to Thruway Village, Cloverdale Plaza and Stratford Village shopping centers
Residents can stick close to home for groceries. Between the Thruway Village, Stratford Village and Cloverdale Plaza shopping centers at the east end of Country Club Road, there’s Harris Teeter, Trader Joe’s, Publix and Whole Foods. The cluster of shopping centers is also home to clothing stores such as Talbots, J. Crew Factory, Loft, Athleta and New Balance, too. And there’s a smattering of restaurants in the same area, from familiar chains to locally owned spots. Midtown Café & Dessertery, in Stratford Village, has been a popular destination since 1987. It began as a little dessert shop; today, it serves all-day breakfast, lunch and baked goods. Little Richard’s Bar-N-Que, down the road, is known for hickory-hardwood-smoked meats smothered in homemade Lexington-style barbecue sauce. The Interstate 40/Hanes Mall Boulevard business corridors, a few miles southwest down U.S. Route 158, are lined with big-box retailers and national chain restaurants, too.

Three main thoroughfares offer quick commuting
Silas Creek Parkway runs north-south along Country Club’s west border, connecting north to Wake Forest University, a major local employer. The 4-mile commute can take as little as 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Downtown Winston-Salem is a little farther. Via U.S. Route 421, the 4.5-mile drive can take about 11 minutes. This main thoroughfare forms Country Club’s southern border, intersecting with U.S. Route 158 near the Stratford Village shopping center. Route 158, known locally as South Stratford Road, connects southwest toward the Hanes Mall Boulevard/Interstate 40 business corridors and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, another big employer. There are Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus stops stationed at regular intervals along main roads in and around the neighborhood, providing service throughout the city. And the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro is only about 30 miles east. “You’ve got the whole Triad region at your fingertips here,” Shumack says.
