Convenient location and competitive prices since 1949
Winston-Salem veterans returned home from World War II to find a housing shortage throughout the city. Enter Easton, established in 1949 as an answer to the crisis. Back then, the neighborhood offered modest homes with manageable mortgages to those who had served their country. Today, many of Easton’s original 20th-century homes are still standing. They’re also still priced competitively; the median sale price tends to be more than $100,000 below the median for the city. Realtor Tannon Hardy of Mundy Realty says it’s the location, in addition to the price point, that appeals to homebuyers these days. “It’s a nice, cute little neighborhood, with two- to four-bedroom homes, close to public transportation and highways and convenient to a lot of area churches.” Faith and Family Baptist Church, New Direction Movement Cathedral and Tabernaculo De Restauracion are just three of nearly 10 houses of worship nearby. “If you’re looking for a lot of nightlife, a lot of things to do, that’ll be in a different neighborhood,” says Realtor Jose Lagunas of Realty of America.
Mid- to late-20th-century homes
As a post-WWII development, Easton’s housing stock is dominated by modest midcentury Cape Cod or Minimal Traditional cottages and ranch-style homes, but a few split-levels and even A-frames pop up here and there. A 48-unit public housing development, Stoney Glen Apartments, lies near the south end of the neighborhood, off Waltrude Lane. Lagunas says the on-market inventory here is low. “I haven’t seen that many homes for sale in this area lately. But it’s the same story in other counties around here, too. The market is slowing down in so many areas across the country.” He adds that many of the clients he works with who express interest in this neighborhood are “looking for a price deal.” Sale prices here start at around $100,000 and can climb as high as $280,000. But most hover between $150,000 and $200,000. And Easton homes, on average, are on the market for just 20 days before going under contract. That’s 13 days faster than the national average.

The high school is an authorized IB World School, and not far from the middle school. It’s near Peters Creek Parkway just a couple miles west of Easton.

A 27-acre park in Easton’s heart
Homes on Glencairn Road and William Drive overlook Easton Park from the neighborhood’s center. A 1/5-mile dirt trail encircles the park’s classic playground, half-size basketball court and multipurpose field. On one end, there’s a covered picnic area and public restrooms. The 27-acre park itself is sunny but bordered on three sides by thick bands of oak and pine trees.

Food Lion is a popular destination for grocery shoppers in Easton.
Shopping, dining and a historic Shell station across the freeway
For groceries and other everyday essentials, residents can head north across Interstate 40 to the Food Lion or Dollar General about 2 miles away. Both stores are in the bustling corridor between Waughtown Street and East Sprague Street. Off Sprague, around the corner from Dollar General, stands the last of Winston-Salem’s eight original 1930s Shell Service Stations. Today, the bright yellow, shell-shaped gas station is a historic landmark and serves as a museum for Preservation North Carolina. There are a few casual dining options nearby, including Kermit’s Hot Dog House, El Rancho Taqueria and La Perlita Restaurant y Carniceria. Locals can grab cold sandwiches, drinks and snacks at Easton Grocery. The convenience store is even closer to home, off Clemmonsville Road just north of I-40.
The nearest shopping district to Easton is a short drive away.
Near four main thoroughfares
Getting around town by bus is made easy by Winston-Salem Transit Authority stops scattered at regular intervals on Old Lexington Road and Thomasville Road. The two main thoroughfares run north-south through Easton. Interstates 40 and 285 are close at hand, too. I-285 runs past the west side of the neighborhood, perpendicular to I-40, which runs past the north side. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood, not very loud considering how close it is to the interstates,” says Lagunas. The 4-mile drive north into downtown can take about 11 minutes, depending on traffic, via Thomasville Road and I-285.
