Low-key living, high-key convenience
Huntington Woods is a small subdivision between Clemmons and Winston-Salem property, where homes are surrounded by thick groves of oak and pine trees. The sylvan buffers belie the neighborhood’s proximity to two major roadways, but Interstate 40 and US Route 421 are both minutes away, connecting residents to bustling business corridors and the surrounding Piedmont Triad. Realtor Matt Ingram, with Real Broker LLC, says two things stand out to homebuyers here. “It’s very close to shopping and dining around Hanes Mall and the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, which is a big employer, so convenience is the biggest appeal. But the average price point is around $300,000, too, so it’s a popular price point and a popular area.”
Competitive prices and oversized lots
The late 1900s and early 2000s-era homes in Huntington Woods come in an array of styles, from classic ranch and Split Level to Colonial Revival and Traditional, even Tudor and Classical Revival. Ingram says that part of the neighborhood’s appeal is the larger lot sizes. Many properties sprawl over at least a quarter of an acre; some are as big as a full acre. Prices run anywhere from $200,000 to more than $550,000, but the median hovers closer to the $300,000 mark, slightly more than the median for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

A hobbyists heaven
Hobby Park, about 3 miles east of home, is what hobby shops were made for. There’s a soap box derby track, a paved and striped downhill strip where miniature car builders can race their creations. “We’ve also held slalom skateboard events there, including the U.S. national championships,” says Bobby Hege, the Lakes & Special Use Facilities Supervisor with the Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks department. He says there’s a control-line circle flyer group that gets together at the park’s circular pads every Saturday, and the nearby radio-controlled (R/C) aircraft strip is popular with local hobbyists, too. But the heaviest traffic in the park, according to Hege, is on the wooded, multiuse trails, which draw mountain bikers and cross-country runners from around the city. “We have a bicycle race through the woods every year, along with a running race,” he says, referring to the annual Racing in the Woods biking event and regular Hobby Trails footraces. Heather Hills Golf Course, a public, executive-length course with 18 holes, is a little more than 2 miles north of Hobby Park. Little Creek Park is about 5 miles north of the golf course, but just 2 miles north of home, and offers all kinds of sports courts/fields, a splash pad and a playground.

A litany of retail and restaurants nearby
At the corner of South Stratford Road and Somerset Drive, about 2 miles east, there’s a Food Lion surrounded by casual eateries. Johnny B’s Grillhouse serves up casual American fare, from pancakes to pork chops; Greek Guy’s Grill, across the street, offers Mediterranean staples like souvlaki and gyros. Hanes Mall, which Ingram describes as “an old-style mall trying to hang on,” is less than 4 miles northeast, across I-40. He says the mall and the surrounding business corridor are full of “great shopping and dining,” including one of his favorite restaurants, Village Tavern. The American pub-style eatery got its start in Winston-Salem in the mid ‘80s and has grown to a popular regional chain, with locations scattered across the Triad.

Huntington Woods is within close driving distance to the mountains and downtown Winston Salem.
Between Clemmons and Winston-Salem
Downtown Winston-Salem is nearly 9 miles northeast of Huntington Woods. The drive takes about 15 minutes via US Route 421, depending on traffic. Interstate 40 curves from the west side of the neighborhood around the north end, connecting from Clemmons to Greensboro. “The Piedmont Triad is a triangle, with Winston-Salem on the western point. High Point is in the middle, but south, and Greensboro is about 40 miles east,” says Ingram. “Because we’re near the highway, you can easily access pretty much any town.”
