This quiet community was one of North Carolina’s first tobacco farms
Ogburn Station is removed from the noise of downtown, resting in Winston-Salem’s northern outskirts. This neighborhood, comprised of several smaller communities and a country club, traces back to North Carolina’s budding tobacco industry in the early 1800s when the Ogburn family established a farm. A train station would arrive in the late 19th century, and the community began flourishing as a hub for trade and small business. J.S. Pulliam Barbecue is a relic of that time, surviving when the neighborhood experienced a decline in the 1970s. Today, The Ogburn Station Merchants Association is trying to reestablish the community’s mom-and-pop scene around Old Walkertown and Old Rural Hall roads. “The neighborhood is just not what it used to be. I wouldn’t say run down, but more deserted, kind of left behind,” says Seth Barker, the general manager of Ogburn Station Meat Market. “There are some vacant buildings, empty parking lots and old gas stations, but we’re not going anywhere,” says Barker, whose grandfather Herman Barker opened the butcher shop in 1975.

J.S. Pulliam Barbeque has been around for over 100 years
The neighborhood’s small-town feel is most evident at its locally owned eateries dotting Old Walkertown Road. A big red “Cheerwine” sign greets customers walking into the green-striped cottage of J.S. Pulliam Barbeque. Since 1910, this counter-serve staple, nicknamed “Hotdog Heaven,” boxes up old-fashioned toasted hotdogs with all the fixings and slaw by the pint. While Taste of the Triad hasn’t been around for nearly as long, the restaurant adorned with paintings by local Black artists is gaining a following for its family style southern soul food. High-quality cuts of meat are the specialty at Ogburn Station Meat Market, where Barker says customers often buy beef, chicken and oxtail. “We’re a little hole in the wall. We’re literally in a hole in the bottom of the hill. If you drive past, you may miss us,” says Barker, who has loved working in the shop for the last decade. “It’s the people you’ve helped for so many years. The community knows my grandfather, of course. He’s been here 50 years. We have many regulars. We cut up and chat and talk about the game.”
Dueling shopping centers on East Hanes Mill Road feature national retailers, such as Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Lowe’s Home Improvement and PetSmart. This same area offers family friendly attractions. Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park is popular for birthday parties with its wide range of experiences, from obstacle courses and climbing walls to virtual reality games and bumper cars. Blockbusters can be seen on Imax at The Grand Winston-Salem movie theater.

Farmers markets and film festivals in Downtown Winston-Salem
Known as the city of arts and innovation, Downtown Winston-Salem offers events year-round. The Riverrun International Film Fest allows local students to submit their home- and school-produced movies each spring. The Winston-Salem Open, a men’s national tennis tournament, draws thousands of attendees to Wake Forest University. "Every month, there's a food truck festival, and almost every weekend, there's a farmers market to go to," says Ramon Lomeli with the Smart Move Group at eXp Realty, who’s been selling homes around Winston-Salem for 10 years. "Ogburn Station is only 10 minutes from downtown, so it's really easy to get to and from the main street where all the events occur." He also mentions the annual Pride Parade in June and a food tour called Eat Drink Triad.
Ranch-style homes with roomy yards and new subdivisions
Aside from the neighborhood’s retail strips, Ogburn Station is a hilly patchwork of forest and farmland with meandering creeks and a sprawling network of residential streets. Along these narrow, country-like roads, single-family homes rest on spacious lots, typically around ½ acre. Ranch-style and raised ranch-style homes, built between 1940 and 1980, are the most common, featuring attached garages or carports and neatly manicured lawns shaded by tall trees. Larger Colonial Revivals, often in the farmhouse style, and smaller Cape Cods and cottages are sprinkled in between. A growing number of New Traditional homes are also popping up in new subdivisions. Most homes cost between $100,000 and $325,000, with properties needing renovation starting around $64,000.

Mineral Springs Elementary and Middle schools share a connected campus
Two elementary schools serve Ogburn Station. Ibraham Elementary receives a C rating from Niche and helps students cultivate a love of reading through reading challenges and visits from authors. However, most students are zoned for Mineral Springs Elementary. The C-plus-rated magnet school has a focus on performing and visual arts, offering weekly enrichment classes like art, music, dance, and theater. The magnet program continues at Mineral Springs Middle, which shares the campus with the elementary school. It gets a C grade. Carver High School, also earning a C, features an Academy of Aviation, Drone and Emergency Technology. The closest private school, Winston Salem Christian School, earns an A-minus and offers prekindergarten through 12th grade. Wake Forest University, a private research university, is about 5 miles away.

Oak Summit Park’s playground looks like a rocket ship
Oak Summit Park is a popular neighborhood spot for exercise, with tennis and pickleball courts and two large fields for pick-up baseball games, flag football and soccer. A large, covered pavilion provides a shady spot for family grill-outs while children run around the big rocket-ship-themed playground featuring various slides and climbing obstacles. Jerry King Park is also in the neighborhood. It’s home to the public Mineral Springs Pool and splash pad, a popular summertime destination. The private Maple Chase Golf and Country Club, formerly Pinebrook Country Club, features an 18-hole course on what was once a dairy farm. A 25-mile drive northwest takes hikers to Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock State Park for wide trails and scenic overlooks of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

U.S. Route 52 and Interstate 74 are close by
The wooded and spread-out nature of Ogburn Station makes the community car-dependent. With very little traffic in the roughly 6-mile commute to Downtown Winston-Salem, Lomeli says the neighborhood is a favorite for residents who work downtown. The neighborhood offers quick access to U.S. Route 52 and Interstate 74. Several Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus routes are available, with stops along Old Walkertown Road and Ogburn Avenue, two of the neighborhood’s bike-friendly routes. The small Smith Reynolds Airport sits just outside Ogburn Station. It’s mainly used for private and corporate aviation. Piedmont Triad International Airport is about 27 miles away, outside of Greensboro.
