Friendly suburban atmosphere, convenient location
Old Sherwood Forest is tucked in a woodsy part of west Winston-Salem. Thick groves of trees shield the homes from street noises emanating from Robinhood Road and Silas Creek Parkway. But the two main thoroughfares are still close enough to make commuting from here to Wake Forest University, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center or downtown quick. All three destinations are within 10 miles of the neighborhood. “You can’t miss the opportunity to live in one of the most coveted neighborhoods in the city,” says Winston-Salem local Carla Hoots, a Realtor with ERA Live Moore. She says the location, convenient not only to major employers, but also public parks, highly rated schools, and shopping, is the neighborhood’s primary appeal. “Properties are perfect for growing families or empty nesters who want space for their children and families to visit.” Ginger Baldwin, a Re/Max Realty Consultants Realtor with more than 45 years of industry experience, adds that its atmosphere is also a large draw. "I call it a baby stroller and dog walker community," she says, adding that she grew up in Old Sherwood, bought her first and second homes here, and now lives in nearby New Sherwood Forest. "It's a very neighborly community where everything you need is within a mile or so."

Highly rated Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools
Many neighborhood students go to Sherwood Forest Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Middle and Mount Tabor High School between preschool and 12th grade. The elementary school, which earns an A grade from Niche, engages kids with curricula that emphasize visual arts and science. Student work is often on display in exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Known locally as SECCA, the multimedia art gallery is a few miles east of the neighborhood. The elementary school itself, though, is within a quarter mile of most homes. Baldwin says when she lived here in fifth grade, she was able to walk to school. Jefferson Middle students work with faculty, staff and parents to reduce food insecurity in the wider Winston-Salem community with the TJMS Community Food Pantry. Mount Tabor high schoolers can participate in extracurriculars ranging from Academic Team to Zoology Club. The middle school gets an A-minus from Niche while the high school gets a B-plus.

Surrounded by outdoor recreation
Old Sherwood Forest is surrounded on nearly all sides by outdoor recreation. Leinbach Park, near the north end of the neighborhood, has a nautical-themed playground – the swings and monkey bars overlook a climbing structure made to look like a ship. There’s also a seasonal water feature, tennis/volleyball courts and a half-mile walking trail. On the community’s southeast end, the Sherwood Parcourse is a paved exercise trail that follows Silas Creek east to Shaffner Park. Shaffner has a playground and tennis court, too, as well as a sunny soccer field. The private Forsyth Country Club, nearby, offers an 18-hole Donald Ross golf course and a heated outdoor pool. In the summer, the club hosts the Crazy Ducks swim team, which is open to non-members. Glenridge Pool, northwest of Old Sherwood Forest, also hosts a summer league swim team: the Gators.
