A connected community near Wake Forest University, home to a civil rights activist
A neighborhood among the trees, Town and Country Estates gives residents peaceful repose from the bustle of downtown Winston-Salem. Large clusters of housing hide between undeveloped woodlands, but despite the community’s dispersed feel, neighbors stay united by participating in the volunteer neighborhood association and coming together in inclusive community spaces. The neighborhood's location is an added benefit. “It’s very convenient for dining, shopping and going downtown,” says Jessica Moore, a Keller Williams Realty Elite Realtor. “The area has a pool, where residents can get a membership.” The community also holds a special distinction as the last residence of poet and civil rights icon Dr. Maya Angelou, who taught at the nearby Wake Forest University. Dr. Angelou lived in the community for over two decades.
A neighborhood association that’s building community
Neighbors come together through the Town and Country Neighborhood Association to plan community socials and beautify shared areas. The association is not a Homeowner’s Association; membership is voluntary, and the group’s priority is creating a unified voice and camaraderie. Moore, a Winston-Salem resident since 2015, says clients who live here have really good experiences with their neighbors. “One resident had a problem with their tree, and their neighbor helped them fix it.” TNCA also organizes seasonal events, such as the Halloween Parade, an Easter Egg Hunt and National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual, nationally recognized celebration that promotes partnership between local law enforcement and neighborhood communities.

Midcentury ranch-style homes and spacious New Traditional builds
The neighborhood is a sprawling network of residential streets that climb and descend over tree-covered rolling hills. The neighborhood’s newest developments feature sidewalks. Homes are evenly spaced on grassy lots, nearly an acre in size. Lawns are neatly trimmed and peppered with tall shade trees and rounded shrubs. New Traditional, split-level and ranch-style homes are most common, usually with three to five bedrooms and attached garages or open-air carports. Jenny Boneno, branch manager at Reynolda Manor Branch Library, says most homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s. “The homes are just good and solidly built, and all the well-established homes from that time have these beautiful red brick exteriors.” Most homes cost between $200,000 and $550,000, but larger New Traditional homes and newly built properties range from $400,000 to more than $800,000. Town and Country Estates features the Dr. Maya Angelou Legacy Home, located on Valley Road. This brick house, adorned with a French door entryway framed by white columns, was where the legendary author and civil rights activist lived from 1991 until her death in 2014.
