Shore Acres’ proximity to Lake Michigan's shore gives residents a variety of leisure options on the water and dry land. North Point Beach and Winthrop Harbor Beach both overlook the lake with sandy shores and broad views of the horizon. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 14:1 and holds a B-minus grade on Niche. North Prairie Junior High School holds a C-plus grade. Winthrop Harbor residents are connected to the Metra rail system through the town’s railway station near 7th Street, less than a mile from the neighborhood’s east side. Waukegan is a 15-minute train ride away, while trips to Chicago generally take about an hour and a half. The nearest hospital, Vista Medical Center East, is about 10 miles south of the neighborhood. For trips beyond the Chicago area, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 43 miles south, while Chicago Midway International Airport is about 72 miles south.
North Point Marina offers a very scenic route for a bike ride along Lake Michigan.
