Imagine waking up to the sound of roosters crowing and the cows mooing. It’s a way of life in Witmer, an Amish Country town full of farmland, which surrounds small pockets of residential neighborhoods in East Lampeter Township.

“Witmer is very serene and out in the country,” says Jack Hess, Realtor with Kingsway Realty, “It’s a very quaint and quiet part of Lancaster County.”

Various single-family homes make up Witmer’s neighborhoods, many of which border farms, offering stunning backyard views of open crop fields. Others are in leafier suburban-like settings with plentiful trees. Most homes were built in the mid-to-late 1900s, with colonial, split-level and ranch-style houses among the most common. Prices typically range from around $350,000 to $400,000. However, you’ll come across some 19th-century homes around $250,000.

As part of the Amish Country, don’t be surprised to come across a few horse and buggies as you make your way around town. You’ll also find several farmer’s markets like Amos Miller Organic Farm, where you can get fresh produce, including raw cow and camel’s milk, grass-fed meats, farm-grown vegetables and more. It’s always fun to watch the camels grazing the fields too. You’ll also find local shops with handmade products, like Lapp’s Toys, which has been making quality wooden toys and children’s furniture since the 1970s.

As you head west, closer to Lancaster, you’ll discover the busier part of the township, full of business parks and a shopping center, which features a Lowe’s and Costco, where you can shop for groceries and household products. You’ll find about a dozen restaurants around town, offering different dining experiences. The Shoppes at Greenfield has several restaurants, including Isaac’s Craft Kitchen & Bar, famous for its craft sandwiches. You can also enjoy fine dining at The Greenfield Restaurant while treated to live jazz music on the piano. Across the street from Costco, you’ll want to check out Chellas Arepa Kitchen, a South American food stand with all outdoor seating, voted the 11th best place to eat by Yelp in 2023. Mr. Sticky’s has the same outdoor dining layout, serving up delicious sweets like its famous cinnamon buns.

For some outdoor fun or relaxation, head to Greenfield Park and check out the many sculptures as you walk around the flowery duck pond. You can also walk across the bridge to lounge in the gazebo right in the middle of the pond. If you prefer getting in the water, bring a kayak or canoe to Perelman Park and float down the Conestoga River. And if you’re looking for some indoor fun, jump around at Sky Zone Trampoline Park, a popular spot for kids.

Students in Witmer are split between Smoketown and Fritz Elementary Schools, which feed into Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, all of which have a B to B+ rating on Niche. High schoolers go to Conestoga Valley High School, which has an A- rating and is ranked the fifth-best high school of 17 in the Lancaster area.

With Downtown Lancaster just six miles away, you can enjoy being close to the city while amongst the Amish Country farmland.
