Established borough with WWII history
Wood-Ridge, located less than 10 miles from Manhattan, offers plenty of ways to commute to the city, as well as its own recreation spots and local businesses. The borough, officially incorporated in 1894, was first known for its rolling grassy hills and farmland. As the area’s population continued to grow during the 17th century, the "Boroughitis" phenomenon that swept through Bergen County led to the development of many residential neighborhoods. “It’s a mostly suburban area that’s popular with commuters,” says Michelle Gregorat, a Realtor with Terrie O'Connor Realtors, who used to live in the borough. During the Second World War, the borough of Wood-Ridge was a bustling location for the war effort. An old Curtiss-Wright aircraft engine plant sat along Passaic Avenue until it was demolished in the 2000s to make way for condos and townhouses. There are still remnants of wartime in the neighborhood’s street names—Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Truman—and with the borough's bronze statue of Rosie the Riveter.
20th-century homes and new condos
On the borough's residential streets, there are modestly-sized homes and lots, with some properties enjoying views of the Manhattan skyline. Tudor-style homes and Cape Cods from the 20th century make up most of the single-family houses here, with many of them including driveways and attached garages. These mostly two-to-three-bedrooms options tend to fall within a price range of $600,000 to $800,000. Additionally, there are newer two-and-three-bedroom condos and townhouses near Wesmont Station that sell for $550,000 to $750,000. “Around this area, the housing market moves pretty fast,” adds Gregorat. Homes in Wood-Ridge typically sell after just two weeks on the market.
The western end of Wood-Ridge is populated with many English style Tudor homes.

Local shopping and dining along Valley Boulevard
Along Valley Boulevard is a CVS, local shops and eateries like Mills Bakery, which has been in business for over 90 years. Buffalo’s, which opened in 2010, is in the borough’s west end and serves southern-style chicken and barbeque. There are also Stop & Shop and ShopRite grocery stores about a mile south along Paterson Avenue. 3 miles south, American Dream Mall offers over 450 shops and restaurants.

Commute by bus, train or car
Roughly 10 miles from Manhattan, residents can reach Penn Station in approximately 30 to 40 minutes from either the Wesmont or Wood-Ridge train stations. Bus stops for the 163 and 164 lines are up and down Valley Boulevard. Wood-Ridge residents can also reasonably commute via car by taking the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel.
Important to Know
Between 1929 and 1974, 160 tons of chemical waste was buried on the Ventron/Vensicol site in Wood-Ridge. An EPA investigation found the contaminants had leached into the soil and groundwater on and off the property. The EPA removed contaminated soil in 1990, and further cleanup efforts continued until 2010. In 2021, tap water tests confirmed Wood-Ridge's water supply met federal health-based drinking water standards. The latest update from the EPA came in 2018, which stated that long-term monitoring and cleanup will continue for the area. Teterboro Airport is also less than a mile west of Wood-Ridge, which may result in ambient jet engine noise.

The houses in Wood-Ridge are not huge million dollar mansions but they are very roomy and have a lot of two story family style homes with great backyards and the most friendly neighbors you will meet.

I have grown up with the same kids I went to kindergarten with, thus leading to all residents knowing one another' business. Although it is a small area it also has it perks such as: everything in walking distance, running into your friends/acquaintances in stores, and generally feeling safe knowing your way around. Overall, it is an okay area to live in.

Wood-Ridge NJ is a very small, tight knit community. The town is well kept, cars can't be parked in the streets over night, and the streets are always very clean. There are always improvements being done to the town to keep it updated. The school system is average, but there are many different school choices surrounding the community.

The only weather problems Wood-Ridge has ever dealt with came in the past couple of years with Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy. Those were the worst I have ever seen here. Other than that, Wood-Ridge just gets hard a couple times with Snow Storms.
