Culturally diverse
Part of Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, Iselin is less than 35 miles outside of New York City. Realtor Rosa Cardoso of Keller Williams, who has sold homes in the region for five years, says diversity is the best part of living in the community. “There’s a large Indian community,” says Cardoso. In fact, there are hundreds of South Asian businesses, storefronts, grocery stores and eateries centrally located in the community. “Exploring other cultures is one of the best things about Iselin.” The cultural influence looms so large that the Iselin Branch Library has a whole section of books in Hindi and Gujarati.
Local cafe employees those with special needs
Mayor Mac’s Café, less than 5 miles from Iselin, is a project spearheaded by Woodbridge’s community-minded Mayor John E. McCormac. The café employs high school graduates between 18 and 21 with special needs. After receiving a building and land donated to Woodbridge by the Hess Corporation, Mayor McCormac says Mayor Mac’s Café became a passion project for the community. He adds that most patrons become regulars. “It’s a phenomenal place. Once you go, you’ll want to come back. We get police and business people coming in. They could go to the steakhouse up the street. But they’ll come here for a chicken sandwich,” McCormac says. He adds that helping teach life and work skills is very satisfying. “You should have seen the employees’ faces when they got their first paycheck,” he says.

Film fest highlights event season
Located on Oak Tree Road is Little India, a hub of over 400 South Asian businesses. Aishwarya is a fashion boutique that combines traditional Indian styles with an American fashion twist. Indian-American supermarket chain Patel Brothers and Hindu temples are also in this shopping district. The shopping strip is also home to several events, including the annual India Day Parade, which occurs every August to celebrate India’s Independence Day. Little India is home to seven other yearly events, including the New Jersey Indian and International Film Festival. McCormac, who lived on the border of the shopping hub in the late 80s to early 90s, is impressed by the transition. “Oak Tree Road was nothing to be proud of until the Asian and Indian communities started purchasing properties,” he explains. “Now, it is one of the most thriving Asian-Indian districts in the country.”
New construction, tree-lined streets and green lawns
Although 85% percent of properties are commercial or storefronts, Cardoso says Iselin continues to grow. “There’s a lot of new construction going on,” she says. Housing price points hover between $228,000 and $892,000 and lot sizes are nearly 6,000 square feet. Cardosa says the housing styles include cottages, colonials and ranch homes on tree-lined streets with sidewalks and well-manicured yards.
