Incorporated in 1767, the Woolwich Township is a historic community comprised of modern housing and preserved farmlands on the western outskirts of Gloucester County. "The town of Woolwich puts the garden in garden state," says Broker Associate Ed Dupper of eXp Realty. "There's a lot of family-owned farms that grow tomatoes, green peppers and corn. The area affords a slow-paced, rural feel while close to shopping, restaurants and parks." Dupper was born and raised in the area and has sold homes for 35 years.

Housing in the Woolwich Township is a blend of the old and new. In the town's heart are colonials and bungalows that date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many houses sport 1,500 square feet and three bedrooms, with features like screened-in porches and intricate landscaping. The township saw substantial growth toward the end of the 20th century as subdivisions with spacious, contemporary colonials and ranch-style homes filed in. "While there was a lot of development, it's far from the high-density feel of the city," Dupper says. "Residents choose this area for the more affordable pricing and larger lots. You'll get lots anywhere between one and three acres." Housing prices range anywhere from $200,000 to $550,000. Most streets are lined with sidewalks and mature trees, often with residents enjoying a stroll.

Students in the Woolwich Township attend two school districts and six overall schools. The first four schools that students attend are under the Swedesboro-Woolwich School District, all of which earned an overall B or B-plus from Niche. Kindergarten students attend Margaret C. Clifford School before advancing to Governor Charles C. Stratton School for first and second grade. Students then progress to General Charles G. Harker School for grades three through five, then to Walter Hill School for grade six. The following two schools that students attend are under the Kingsway Regional School District, which earned an overall B-plus from Niche. For grades seven and eight, students attend Kingsway Regional Middle School, scoring an overall four out of 10 on GreatSchools. Students proceed to Kingsway Regional High School to earn their diplomas. There's something for everyone at KRHS, including gaming club, art club, model UN and more. The high school touts an overall six out of 10 on GreatSchools.

Locke Ave Park is town's outdoor respite. Local athletes have a home at the park's ample baseball and soccer fields. Additional park amenities include a playground for the kids, a covered pavilion and walking trails. For a more scenic day outside, enjoy a walk by Lake Narraticon. You'll find several lake-side benches and picnic tables under towering trees that afford idyllic water views. Locals especially enjoy the lake during the fall as trees bloom with warm tones, scattering leaves across Park Avenue. The lake also sports a small kayak launch if you want to explore the lake.

You have ample access to dining and shopping in the Woolwich Township. The closest big box grocery store is the newly constructed ShopRite in Center Square Plaza. And if you need more grocery options, an ACME Market is 5 miles away in the neighboring Logan Township. "Downtown Swedesboro has several fine restaurants and pizzerias, so many locals head there to enjoy a meal," Dupper says. Eateries like The Red Hen line Kings Highway, adorning the community's town center. The restaurant boasts a rustic aesthetic with a diverse menu that includes chicken parmesan and pesto penne. If you need a sweet treat after dinner, head next door to Lick for a scoop of ice cream. The downtown area is also home to ample events, like the dancing in the street summer concert series, the food truck festival and the Halloween parade.

"You have a myriad of people that commute to different areas, like Philadelphia, Wilmington and even New York," Dupper says. "And it's convenient to the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 295." If you're spending the day in the city, Philadelphia is 25 miles northeast, and Wilmington is about 20 miles west. Most residents drive in the area, but several bus stops of the NJ Transit system line Kings Highway. The Woolwich Township's pastoral landscape offers a rural feel with a proximal zip code.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. I like that Swedesboro does not have an over crowded town and you can drive 10 minutes in any direction and hit another town with nice shops, restaurants, and city life. The only things I wish Swedesboro had were a Starbucks/ good cafe and a good thrift shop.

Swedesboro is a small little town that could be so much more! I hope to see more locally owned businesses making their way into the area.

Swedesboro is a small town like in a movie. It is so cute, diverse, welcoming, and homey. Gloucester County is "close to everything, far from it all," and Swedesboro really fits that description as we're only half an hour away from Philly yet only about ten minutes away from more rural areas. In addition to the great local businesses, there are many community-wide events that get all of the residents involved.
