As the flat streets of Burlingame Heights unfold on the outskirts of Grand Rapids, the Michigan neighborhood offers a residential atmosphere populated by ranch homes, parks and locally-established restaurants. Situated between the shopping hub of 28th Street and the Prairie Parkway, the Grand River isn’t too far to the northwest and numerous nearby parks are a short drive away. “I’m very familiar with the streets and homes,” says Sarah Takens, a Realtor with RE/MAX of Grand Rapids. “I love telling stories of the parks and attractions around the city, and I share childhood stories while touring the homes I grew up playing in and around.”
Smaller bungalows and Cape Cods are almost as common as ranch homes in Burlingame Heights.

Multi-level homes amongst ranch residences
Many of the homes along Burlingame Heights’ streets lie on similar properties, with wide driveways and sidewalks near their base running along the flat streets. Spacious ranch homes with attached garages can be found here, as well as the occasional cul-de-sac and some multi-level homes with additional space on the property for breathing room. Prices in Burlingame Heights typically range from around $150,000 to $300,000, and alongside the ranch homes there’s also occasional bungalows and Cape Cods. Individual flair on the properties include brick or siding, as well as colorful exteriors beaming outward.

A quartet of schools for education
Gladiola Elementary School is where students can begin their education in Burlingame Heights, scoring a B-minus with Niche and enrolling up through fourth grade. Wyoming Intermediate School receives a C-plus and is the site of grades five through six, while Wyoming Junior High School scores a B-minus and spans seventh through ninth grades. Wyoming High School also garners a B-minus rating, offering a Middle College program and athletics like basketball, bowling and wrestling.

Prairie Park, located just across the southern boundary, is where the only skate park in the area is located. Along with ramps and rails to do stunts on, visitors can find a playground and a picnic shelter for days outdoors. To the northwest, Lamar Park offers a splash pad, athletic fields and disc golf amenities, as well as a pier for fishing and a path circling its pond. As for the northeastern direction from Burlingame Heights, Pinery Park’s walking trail loop is a hallmark of the area, and it also features baseball fields that host Little League games.

Longtime restaurants and supermarkets
Residents of Burlingame Heights can grab a bite to eat at Lindo Mexico Restaurante Mexicano, which holds its place in the community as a gathering spot in high regard. Other establishments in the neighborhood include Marge’s Donut Den, Maya Mexican Grill and Bar and Frankie V’s Sicilian Bar and Grille. Russ’ Restaurants has a location in the Wyoming region as well, located in the northwest area of Burlingame Heights and in operation for nearly 100 years. Fresh produce can be selected from the shelves of the Family Fare Supermarket, gourmet candies are found at Albertus Koeze & Co. and Supermercado La Esmerelda is a popular supermarket and taqueria in the neighborhood. 28th Street is where residents will find most of the area’s convenience stores and shops.

Flora like flowers and Christmas trees are available at Flowerland, and just down 28th Street residents can find the Wyoming Village Shopping Center, which has a Dollar Tree and local horror establishment The Haunt. Just across Michael Avenue is the Rogers Plaza Town Center, where shoppers can find car parts at its AutoZone or tools at the Harbor Freight. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet stocks general needs on its floor, and visitors can also pick up clothes at the Ross Dress for Less and exercise at the Planet Fitness.

Getting around the Grand Rapids area
Highway 131 runs the entirety of Michigan, running north and south in the western half of the state and connecting Burlingame Heights residents with other major areas like Kalamazoo and Portage. Getting on the highway is a few minutes’ drive to the east down 28th Street, and public transportation is available by riding the Rapid bus line. The neighborhood community also retains its charm despite being close to the highway. “The pinnacle of Burlingame Heights and the rest of Wyoming is along its residential streets,” Takens says. “Wyoming truly is one of the most diverse, interesting melting pots of people in the suburbs of Grand Rapids.”
