Located just 6 miles south of Grand Rapids, Oriole Park is ideal for commuters, but it’s much more than a bedroom community. The neighborhood lies in Wyoming, a leafy Michigan city that owes its name not to Wyoming, the Cowboy State, but to Wyoming County in New York. It was once a rural community, but as it suburbanized, much of its natural landscape was preserved through parks. So, today, residents of neighborhoods like Oriole Park enjoy plenty of room for recreation. Oriole Park is home to two green spaces, and several more are well within a 5-mile radius. “I’m particularly fond of Wyoming, and Oriole Park is a good spot in it,” says local RE/MAX Realtor Sarah Takens, a born-and-raised Wyoming native. “The city does an amazing job with its parks and public transit. There’s public transportation running anywhere you want to go within walking distance of any location in Wyoming.” Bus stops are readily available, even as deep in the suburbs as Oriole Park. The neighborhood balances a quiet and verdant streetscape with a central and well-connected location right off U.S. Highway 131.

“Affordable” midcentury charmers
Authentic midcentury charm graces Oriole Park’s sidewalk-lined streets with vinyl-sided simplicity. That said, there is architectural variety. These homes — most of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s — range from ranch-style to split-level to Colonial Revival to Cape Cod. Driveways are standard features. Attached and detached garages are fairly common but are less so among properties from the early ‘50s. Most houses are on single lots sized around a third of an acre. Prices, ranging from $206,000 to $358,000, are a little less than Kent County’s average, says local Realtor Tanya Powell-May with Keller Williams Realty. “I wouldn’t call them starter homes, but it is an affordable price point.”
Many homes in the Oriole Park neighborhood have large front yards.
Single-story craftsman-style homes with a detached garage are not uncommon in Oriole Park.

Wyoming and Kelloggsville public schools
Oriole Park is almost evenly split between two school districts. Students on the west side attend Wyoming Public Schools while their eastern peers attend a smaller school district, Kelloggsville Public Schools. Oriole Park Elementary, graded B on Niche, is knitted into the fabric of Wyoming Public Schools. This school is down the street from the neighborhood and participates in a district mentoring program that invites students at Wyoming High to tutor and support elementary schoolers. Wyoming Public Schools also includes Wyoming Intermediate, rated C-plus; Wyoming Junior High, graded B-minus; and Wyoming High, also graded B-minus. East-side students can start school at West Kelloggsville Elementary, rated C-plus, before attending Kelloggsville Middle, rated C, and graduating from Kelloggsville High, rated C-plus.

Oriole Park and parks aplenty
It's easy to get outdoors in Oriole Park. The community’s eponymous green space invites neighborhood kids to explore the playground and splash pad. Additionally, it features a quarter-mile paved pathway, a basketball court, pavilions and tennis courts. Although 40th Street Park has less going on, this grassy field is quite popular among resident dog owners. More recreational areas are right across the street. Palmer Park’s 300 acres are full of trails, forests, wetlands and wildlife. Next door, the manicured fairways of Kaufman Golf Course are open from mid-March to mid-July. After some snow, both Kaufman Golf Course and Palmer Park transform into winter wonderlands for local skiers. Two-mile loops snake through the trees of the park while the golf course greens are blanketed in white, offering skiers snowy, open space. There’s also Buck Creek Nature Trail, home to creekside walkways and a boardwalk that branches off Lemery Park, which is yet another nearby green space. Lemery Park has a selection of athletic facilities and is a good spot for pick-up basketball games, Takens says.

Mr. Burger and Russo’s Pizza
A quick trip to Mr. Burger is a Wyoming tradition. This longtime local chain serves up fast-food favorites, from cheeseburgers to root beer floats. Russo’s Pizza is another community staple, seeing as it’s the oldest pizzeria in the Grand Rapids area, and they’re still baking pies in an authentic hearth on the corner of 44th Street and Burlingame Avenue. As for restocking the pantry and running other errands, there are plenty of day-to-day conveniences around Oriole Park, including doctors’ offices, hair salons and retailers like Target, Aldi and Family Fare Supermarket.

An easy route to Downtown Grand Rapids
It’s a simple, 6-mile commute from the heart of Oriole Park to Downtown Grand Rapids. All residents have to do is hop on U.S. Route 131, less than a mile outside the community, and head north. Carless commutes are uncomplicated as well. Bus stops are on the neighborhood’s south side along 44th Street and its north side on 36th Street. “The bus line’s convenient, but a lot of people still drive,” Powell-May says. “We don’t have much traffic, so it’s easy to get around.”
