Shopping centers near custom suburban properties

Beech Hill, 26 miles from New York City, is bordered by the highly sought-after Scarsdale and Eastchester. Residents of Beech Hill pay Yonkers prices but use the Scarsdale post office and many participate in Scarsdale community events. The suburban neighborhood is surrounded by foliage and hidden behind the Yonkers Gateway Center and the Central Plaza Shopping Center along Central Park Avenue. “The properties are very interesting, all custom built,” says Julia Ricciuti, a neighborhood real estate agent with Re/Max Prime Properties. These custom homes and Beech's more open, suburban atmosphere is why residents choose to settle in the area. Beech Hill combines the convenience of nearby shopping and dining with the appeal of custom properties in a suburban environment.

Custom homes along winding roads

Dense foliage and large homes line winding roads behind the Yonkers Gateway Center. Most properties are custom-built homes, while others are in the Tudor Revival or ranch-style with manicured front and back yards. Some have heated in-ground pools and fenced-in backyards. Bronx Hill is slightly elevated, and homes may offer views across Yonkers to the Hudson River and New Jersey to the west. Single-family homes range from $980,000 to over $2 million. The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Shopping and dining along Central Park Avenue

“Beech Hill is in the middle of three different shopping areas,” says Ricciuti. The Yonkers Gateway Center offers residents a variety of shopping and eating options, including BestBuy, Five Guys, PetSmart and other chain restaurants and retailers. Central Park Avenue is lined with shopping centers and strip malls. Over in Scarsdale, a mile away, a collection of restaurants and retailers line East Parkway. Eastchester's Vernon Hills Shopping Center, 2 miles away, includes specialty medical offices and The Fresh Market. Further along White Plains Road, local eateries and boutiques make up the downtown Eastchester area. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema within the Yonkers Gateway Center serves cocktails, beer, wine and appetizers to patrons as they watch new releases or classic films. A mile away, off Central Park Avenue, Mount Olympos Diner serves American fare in a New York-style diner. There is a ShopRite supermarket along state Route 100, and popular grocer MOM’s Organic Market is 5 miles away.

Commuters use Bronx River Parkway and Scarsdale station

Commuters use the Bronx River Parkway to reach New York City in about an hour and LaGuardia Airport, 20 miles west, in 50 minutes. Those wanting to avoid driving in the city use the Scarsdale train station, a mile away, to reach New York in under an hour on the Harlem Line. Bee-Line bus stops along Central Park Avenue take residents to other parts of Yonkers and Westchester County. For medical services, the NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester hospital is 3 miles away.

Walking and biking along the Bronx River Pathway

One of the main draws to living along the eastern ridges of Yonkers is the Bronx River Pathway, which spans the neighborhood and leads south to New York City and north to Valhalla. This wooded and paved 11.2-mile trail along the Bronx River offers bikers, joggers and pedestrians a year-round resource for outdoor recreation. Garth Road Park, under a mile away, is a small green space with a stream, community garden, a playground and basketball court. Beech Hill residents wanting more parkland can head a few blocks east to access the nearly 280-acre Sprain Ridge Park. The park's has a county pool open from mid-April to mid-October, along with walking paths, a playground and other outdoor amenities.

Christmas tree lighting, block parties

“We have a neighborhood association,” says Ricciuti. “They’re very active in the community, so we have a Christmas tree lighting and a block party every year in September.” For larger-scale events, residents head to the Down to Earth Scarsdale Farmers Market near the Scarsdale train station. The farmers market is open on Sundays from May to November and offers locally sourced produce and artisan goods. Religious services are held at Faith Church New York, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Our Lady of Fatima Church and others around the area.
