Buckeye Platt residents enjoy time along the Mahoning River, running through the neighborhood.
Mahoning River defines landscape
The Mahoning River flows through the eastern region of Buckeye Plat, making it a noteworthy feature of the landscape. Mature oaks and maple trees shade the wide, winding streets and sidewalks. "The residential areas are scenic and peaceful in Youngstown," says longtime resident Jennifer Muhlenkamp. Another characteristic that defines the eastern border is a Youngstown & Austintown Railroad track that runs parallel to the river, north to south. "This creates an industrial section," says 20-year Realtor Debbie Mook of Klacik Real Estate, who lives nearby. "Here, you'll find construction businesses, landscaping businesses, concrete mixing companies, places like that." Though the trains make noise when they roll through the area, residents say it doesn't bother them. "You might hear them when they change tracks, but it's not a big deal," says William Watson, contact person for Buck Eyes and Ears neighborhood group and 40-year neighborhood resident.
Downtown is a 4-mile drive
With Downtown Youngstown just a 4-mile drive, commuting is convenient for residents. Interstate 680, which runs along the community's eastern border, and Ohio Route 62 are easily accessible. Mercy Health - St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is the nearest hospital, and Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is a 20-mile drive. Western Reserve Transit Authority (WRTA) has bus stops in the area, including along Powers Way.

National Folk architecture is the primary design
Many of the residences date back to the turn of the 20th century, while others were built from the 20s through midcentury. A few homes feature barn-shaped roofs, tapping into modern farmhouse designs and embracing the charm of Ohio's rural and agricultural history. Two-story homes draw from the simplistic designs of National Folk architecture, a style devoted to accessible materials and nonfrivolous designs. Additional styles include Craftsman and ranch-style. Older homes that need upkeep typically sell for between $40,000 and $80,000. Renovated homes in good condition can run between $85,000 and $120,000. Lots are about 1/8 acre, suitable for a small garden or sitting area. Homes either have detached garages or utilize street parking. "Because the area is more affordable, we see a lot of first-time buyers and investors," Mook says.
