Historic community with proximity to everything

The grand old Victorian and Tudor houses of historic Wick Park once housed the "who's who" of early 20th-century Youngstown's elite. Today, the area is known for its vintage homes, large community park and central location. Residents within walking distance of downtown and Youngstown State University (YSU), located south of Wick Park, include students, working professionals and families. Narrow streets densely lined with trees and broken sidewalks wind throughout the neighborhood, showcasing homes, many in need of updating. Some front lawns are in better shape than others, and many open, overgrown lots are scattered about.

Historic Victorians and Tudors

"Wick Park is full of old estates, homes that could be almost 100 years old at this point," says Realtor Erica Winner-Sauceman of Keller Williams Chervenic Realty. Winner-Sauceman has sold homes across the area for over 6 years. "Some [homes] have three fireplaces or old boiler systems, which are pieces of history you rarely see anymore." In addition to Victorian homes and Tudors, the neighborhood has Colonial revivals and Craftsman homes. Some homes were purchased as affiliates to YSU, and some student organizations occupy a few houses. Prices range between $27,000 and $189,000.

Summer Jazz in the Park

On Sundays, Wick Park hosts Jazz in the Park from July through September. "It's been going on for over 30 years, and it continues to attract people from all over Youngstown," says Erica Avery, Realtor with Liberty Home Services, who was born and raised in the city. "There are food trucks and tents. It's an annual favorite."

Beautification and preservation of downtown

Volunteer groups throughout the city work hard to promote a sense of community pride. The Youngstown Neighborhood Association advocates for preservation and togetherness through various events and regular meetings. Youngstown CItyScape is dedicated to the beautification of the greater downtown area. "We're a community development organization that invests time and energy to revitalize landmarks like Wick Park," says Sharon Letson, executive director of Youngstown CityScape. On the first Saturday after Memorial Day, Cityscape holds Planting Day, when over 1,000 people head downtown to prune, mulch and plant.
