A community in the center of the city

Central City is a neighborhood in the heart of Yuba City. In this urban neighborhood, residents live in older homes and are surrounded by popular local bars and restaurants. Buyers seek out this area for its convenience. Highway access and neighborhood businesses make it a sought-after location, as residents are within a short drive or walking distance of many events and amenities. It's an area for people who want to be around a busy city center that continues to grow. New businesses are coming to the Central City area, and the city has further plans to beautify and expand the downtown neighborhood. Residents will be in an area with enduring popularity that continues growing decades later.

Older homes in the neighborhood

Central City might be in the middle of town, but the neighborhood streets feel residential, with green yards and mature trees. The blocks were designed decades ago, but the city is making strides toward beautifying and modernizing the area. New businesses have already come to the area, and there are plans to bring in more businesses and public spaces. “They’re mostly older homes in the center of the city,” says Nicole Holland, Yuba City local and a Realtor at Showcase Real Estate. “We don’t have a lot of new builds. There are a few projects the city is considering to bring new builds to the area.” Pre-war cottages built in the early 20th century start at $200,000 and go up to $380,000. Bungalows go from $300,000 to over $400,000.

Central City is home to many local restaurants

“People enjoy being so close to all of the bars and restaurants,” says Judy Smith, a Coldwell Banker Associated Brokers Realtor who has previously sold in the area. “There are tons in the area.” Along Plumas Street, residents will find lots of places to eat, like Lee’s Canton and Iguanas Mexican Grill. Linda’s Soda Bar & Grill is a classic diner that has been a popular restaurant for years. City Cafe is a more upscale eatery. Sutter Buttes Brewing Company is a local brewery and restaurant with beer on tap and classic American food. The neighborhood has a few convenience stores, and Central City is only a short drive to larger grocery stores like WinCo Foods and Raley’s.

Gauche Aquatic Center and Yuba-Sutter Fairground

Central City is right in the center of the city, so feels pretty urban. However, it's the site of two large and popular public amenities: Gauche Aquatic Park and Yuba-Sutter Fairground. “The waterpark is wonderful,” says Smith. “It’s one of the city’s best features.” At the aquatic center, visitors swim laps in the 10-lane pool, go down the waterslide or explore the infinity pool and “sprayground.” The center also offers fitness classes and swim lessons. The fairground is used for various livestock shows throughout the year.

Events in Central City

Every June, residents from Yuba and Sutter counties head to the Yuba-Sutter Fair. Central City residents can walk to the fairground from their front doors. The fair includes livestock exhibitions, carnival rides and specialty fair food. Local musicians also perform during the fair weekend. Central City is also the headquarters of The Acting Company and The Gallery at Yuba Sutter Arts Galleries. Locals can see live shows or browse works of local artists in their own neighborhood.

Kids attend Yuba City schools

Yuba City Unified School District serves the neighborhood. Kids can start school at Bridge Street Elementary School, which earned a C from Niche. From there, they go on to Gray Avenue Middle School, graded C-plus. Most neighborhood kids can attend Yuba City’s newest high school, River Valley High, which has earned a B-plus from Niche. At River Valley High, students are on a block schedule as opposed to the traditional six-period scheduling other Yuba City high schools offer.

Getting around in Central City

“It’s a great neighborhood for commuters because it's close to the highway,” says Smith. State Route 20 runs across the northern border of the neighborhood, making it accessible to all residents of Central City. Residents can easily travel anywhere in the city or head to outlying areas like Chico, 50 miles north, or Sacramento, 40 miles south. The city bus circulates in Central City and throughout the rest of Yuba City. While Sutter County Airport is in the neighborhood, it does not offer commercial flights. The closest commercial airport is 40 miles south at the Sacramento International Airport. Despite the through traffic and private flights out of the airport, it doesn’t detract from the neighborhood. “It doesn’t really get noisy, even with traffic and the airport,” says Holland.
