Lockport, LA is a small community of about 2,400 people along Bayou Lafourche, where many residents know one another and families often stay for generations. Some homes sit along Bayou Lafourche and nearby canals, though they do not have private docks. The Lafourche Parish School District has a high rating and allows charter transfers, open enrollment, and out-of-district transfers when space is available. Younger students attend highly rated Lockport Lower Elementary School, then Lockport Upper Elementary, and later Lockport Middle. Outdoor features include Bayou Side Park with a walking trail, playground, fishing spots, a boat launch, nearby baseball diamonds and tennis courts, plus the Lockport Elevated Wetlands Boardwalk and Lake Fields for nature viewing and fishing. Crescent Avenue is the main dining and shopping corridor, with seafood, Cajun, and Mexican restaurants and a local grocery, while larger retailers are in Raceland 6 miles north and Houma 18 miles southwest. The community is car-dependent, with Highway 1 connecting to U.S. Highway 90 about 7 miles north, leading toward New Orleans 50 miles away and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport 37 miles away. Flooding, severe storms, hurricanes, and local wildlife such as alligators can be concerns, and residents use several local clinics or travel 5 miles north to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital.
