Its story begins with Erastus Hurlburt, son of Major Horace Hurlburt & a member of the illustrious Hurlburt family, who acquired the property in 1850. Erastus Hurlburt is a descendant of Joseph Hurlburt, an early settler who established the eastern section of what is now Washington in 1734. Erastus Hurlburt owned the general store for many years until his death in 1902. Over the years, the house has served various purposes, each contributing to its cultural significance. In 1903, the house became the clubhouse of the Washington Club, a recreational hub for residents & Yale athletes for summer training. The Washington Club's ownership of the property lasted until 1945, when it was sold to the Gunnery & repurposed as a dormitory until 1969.
