About This Home

As of June 2024

Originally built in 1861, this sun-flooded 20-foot-wide townhouse is located in the heart of the Murray Hill Historic District. As many mid-19th century homes in Murray Hill were heavily remodeled, 146 has maintained its original aesthetic. Builders Benjamin Wise, Jr. and Joseph Whitehead began construction on four townhouses in 1860; 140 to 146. In 1866, 146 East 38th Street was called home for the first time by the McCafferty family. By the 1870's Martin Herz, and his wife Julia Ann Singer, one of the many children of Isaac Merritt Singer, founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company lived at 146 for over a decade. The house had been brought up to date while preserving the architectural details—mantels, plasterwork and double doors below an arched pediment supported by robust foliate brackets.

Parlor Level:

This stunning property has undergone simultaneously fabulous and tasteful renovations that preserve every inch of its charm. A beautifully manicured patio greets you before you even enter the home. Upon walking up the stairs, through the double-doors, into the lovely vestibule and spacious foyer you are met by a custom Zuber wallpaper that embellishes the staircase. On your left, you are led into two large sitting areas that feature two beautiful marble wood-burning fireplaces. This parlor floor has ample space for entertaining guests, with a powder room and wet bar subtly tucked away for convenience and privacy.

Garden Level:

Moving downstairs to the garden floor, is the formal dining room. This then feeds into the spacious eat-in kitchen outfitted with a wood burning fireplace and windows that look out to the backyard. Step directly out in to your private, south-facing backyard with plenty of room to entertain or unwind.

Third Level:

The primary suite is located on the third floor of the home and is equipped with a fireplace as well. The room next to the primary, currently arranged as a home gym can be configured as a bedroom, home office or dressing room. The luxurious en-suite bathroom is spa worthy, every morning you can enjoy your private balcony for a morning coffee.

Fourth Level:

Up the stairs you’re instantly illuminated by an overhead skylight. The fourth floor consists of two bedrooms with marble fireplaces and one smaller bedroom, currently set up as an office. This floor has 2 full bathrooms, one being en-suite.

Cellar:

The cellar is meticulously maintained with plenty of room for storage, and features a temperature-controlled room used as a wine cellar.

Situated between Lexington & Third Avenue with easy access to Grand Central Station’s Metro North, LIRR trains and major subway lines. Also, in close proximity to the Hampton Jitney, Bryant Park, the NY Public Library, Trader Joe’s, Fairway, D’Agostino and numerous top restaurants, shops and bars.
