As many mid-19th century homes in Murray Hill were heavily remodeled, 146 has maintained its original aesthetic. Builders Benjamin Wise, Jr. and Joseph Whitehead began construction on four townhouses in 1860; 140 to 146. In 1866, 146 East 38th Street was called home for the first time by the McCafferty family. By the 1870's Martin Herz, and his wife Julia Ann Singer, one of the many children of Isaac Merritt Singer, founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company lived at 146 for over a decade. The house had been brought up to date while preserving the architectural details—mantels, plasterwork and double doors below an arched pediment supported by robust foliate brackets.
