In 1952 architect John Lautner designed a gem of a house for well-known guitarist Ted Bergren in the Hollywood hills. Six years later, that same design was duplicated in the little-known 39-home enclave of SnowCreek Village, just minutes from downtown Palm Springs. The authors of Lautner A-Z have dubbed the desert house the "pirate Lautner." In their comprehensive study of Lautner, the writers conclude that this mysterious desert home is the only one of the two that successfully preserves the original atmosphere that Lautner created. As in all of Lautner's most aesthetically successful projects, this home's interior has a direct connection to the dramatically wild landscape that surrounds it. Perfectly sited among the boulders in the foothills of the north face of Mt. San Jacinto, the unobstructed views to the top of the mountain are magical.The open-plan interior has a dramatic, swooping butterfly roof with exposed beams that are straight and true, this house was beautifully built.
