A time when life was grand! Welcome to Plum Brook Farm! This charming, modernized antique colonial (c.1870) with 1.87acres is breathtaking. This home has a certain cache as the former home for more than 20 years of a distinguished literary figure, the two-term United States Poet Laureate (2001-2003) and New York Poet Laureate (2004-2006), Billy Collins. This residence offers no grandiosity, no soaring entry foyers, but rooms of intimate scale, with the exception of a 1960's addition (with a bank of windows oriented to stunning grounds with views of a koi pond and jacuzzi hot tub. The property, slightly under two acres, is well insulated from neighboring houses by a variety of mature trees, perennial gardens, brick walkways, flowering trees/shrubs, and woodland paths. This home offers privacy and is enclosed with fencing and an automated gate. This residence dates back to owner F.B. Early, who had his shop located in what is now the two-car garage. An 1872 map available at your visit will show Mr. Early's home nestled between the expansive farms and grist mill operations of the Voris and Hallock families. A labor of love for the current owner, who is just as endearing as former owners and an interior designer who renovated the home over the past few years. From the exterior to interior wallpaper removal, many rooms were re-plastered and ceilings replaced. New hardwood floors in the kitchen, where discolored 1960s asbestos tiles were lifting up, created the opportunity to visually link the dining room hardwood floors and kitchen. Stained Cararra countertops were restored, as were the damaged bluestone floors in the family room with radiant heat. New porcelain tiles in both bathrooms replaced damaged tiles as well as fixtures. New LG refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher, and all parts replaced in a superior old Viking gas range. Landscaping the exterior included reseeding and spraying with broad-leaf herbicides, and a new six-foot wood fence was installed, nearly 500 feet long. A chainlink fence six feet high contains a large area at the rear of the house for one's dogs. An irrigation sprinkler system was resuscitated and is fully functional. There are two wells on the property that provide all necessary water. Seller recently pulled out in-ground oil tank and will be delivered with paperwork prior to closing. There are many things to mention, including a new roof, a new furnace, a new AC system, and a new driveway. Outbuildings include a gardening shed, playhouse, and upper storage room in the garage. Built-ins throughout, original wide-board hardwood floors, and just a feeling of tranquility and beyond. A feeling of yesteryear in 2022 makes this the perfect weekend or year-round oasis. Floor plans are available for this home, as well as a survey. This home has been included in the Somers Historical Society exhibition "Windows to the Past: Historic Structures in Somers" In his book Sailing Alone Around the Room, Billy Collins beautifully writes "Where I Live," a poem reflecting the love of this home for his family and for every family to come!
