LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN NATCHEZ, THE WIGWAM WAS ORIGINALLY A SIMPLE DWELLING. In the 1850's Peter Little of Rosalie gave the home to his niece Eliza Rivers & her husband. At that time, it was enlarged & remodeled, adding two wings on either side of a recessed porch, a large central dormer, triple windows, & cast-iron posts & balustrade across the front. With fine millwork & arched doorways throughout, there is an elaborately hand painted ceiling, a grand display of ornamental plaster, & working gasoliers in the home. During the Civil War, it was inside Fort McPherson as depicted by pictures of the Union soldiers on the porch. Currently, the home consists of a center hallway with four rooms on either side, including two bedrooms & bathrooms on the main floor, & two bedrooms & baths upstairs. In the 1960's, a courtyard was added in the back. Listed on the National Register of Historic Homes, the Wigwam is not only a home, but also a wonderful venue for entertaining.
