Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts is Akron’s only public middle school designed specifically for students interested in the visual and performing arts. Serving nearly 400 students in fourth through eighth grade, Miller South offers tuition-free open enrollment to students from around Akron and the surrounding areas. Students must audition in band, dance, orchestra, theater, visual art or vocals to be admitted. The Miller South building, located in the Lane-Wooster neighborhood of Akron, was built in 1956 as South High School. It features a newly renovated 900-seat auditorium, a dance studio, a keyboard lab and state-of-the-art graphics arts computers. In addition to the standard core curriculum, Miller South integrates fine art and performance programming into each student’s academic plan. Students receive daily instruction in their focus area but are also encouraged to explore other pathways to broaden their interests. Throughout the year, they get the chance to perform or show their work in the community. According to the Ohio State Report Card, Miller-South consistently ranks average in academics. However, it has previously received the Excellent with Distinction rating from the Ohio Department of Education. Many Miller South students go on to attend the Akron School for the Arts program, which is located within Firestone High School in West Akron.
