Sam Houston High School, nicknamed “Big Sam” opened in 1963 in the fall semester. The first graduating class graduated in the spring of 1965. The school’s original location was on Browning Drive but has moved to an updated campus off Sam Houston Drive in east Arlington. The school operates within the Arlington Independent School District and serves ninth through 12 grade students. Sam Houston High School offers sophomores the ability to apply for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. If accepted, they complete intensive coursework in their junior and senior years. They will complete classes in six academic areas, including English and mathematics. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program also focuses on science, history, and world language. Students participate in an approved International Baccalaureate elective. Electives range from fine arts courses, like visual arts, film and dance. Other electives include taking a third language or studying within the technology field. The school’s namesake is Samuel Houston. The American politician and soldier is widely known for his role in bringing Texas into the United States as a constituent state and for being part of the victory at the battle of San Jacinto, which secured Texas’s independence from Mexico. The school celebrates this Texas history through its mascot, the Long Tall Texan, and the school colors red, white and blue.

I would like for sam houston to be more strict about the rules , and how all these problems students have that can be avoided .

Sam Houston, from what I first heard, was 'ghetto,' impoverished and prone to fights (as if it was not any other school). However, what I found was that it was just a normal school with a bad shell. Within it, there were many things to improve on overall, but the student experience I've had here was nothing short of promising.

Overall Sam Houston has been a great experience, i'd say this is fully thanks to the teachers at Sam Houston.

Someone needs to write an updated review of this school.* Do students want to learn or do students just want a free-period to hang-out?* Are the students respectful to teachers?* Since when is it allowed for a student to be on their cell phones during class?

I am a student at this school and honestly some of the teachers here can't teach. My first year of Geometry was bad she did not ask if everyone was on the same page or explain the homework and I had to take tutoring some days. I never went to tutoring till then. Second the school is awfully crowded...
