Henderson Mill Elementary is the first STEAM-certified elementary school in Georgia. It earned this distinction in 2017, five years after becoming one of the first STEM-certified elementary schools in the state, at a time when Georgia was pioneering such programs in the United States of America. It is now a statewide model for other schools that are planning to develop STEM programs. The school is tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood anchored by mid-century ranches and two-story brick houses built in the 1970s and 80s. Also near the school are clusters of two-story houses built since the 1990s. A breezeway with a folded-plate roof greets visitors and students upon arrival and is a reminder that the school first opened in 1965. The school was led by only two principals for its first 30 years of operation. As the population of Northlake grew and school leadership transformed in the early aughts, Henderson Mill Elementary experienced a period of development in which it established new educational programs and community partnerships to provide long-term funding for STEM programs. About 500 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten to fifth grade attend Henderson Mill Elementary, which is part of DeKalb County Public Schools. Test scores generally fall near the average for the region. The student body reflects the racial diversity of the community, and it is served by educational programs for gifted education, students with hearing impairment, and reading tutors. The school publishes important information and documents for parents and guardians in both English and Spanish. Curriculum is taught in project-based learning. In this method, students identify problems, create solutions, and then actively engage in modeling those solutions to explore classroom subjects. Often, students tackle problems that include a social component and impact the local community.

1st year at Henderson Mill Elementary. Love the diversity!! The staff seems to show proactive measures in creating an environment to help all students from any background. They could use more teachers to reduce the classroom size. 22 children per teacher is a bit much! The building needs to be updated in many areas.

Send your kids elsewhere until this principal is removed. I have pulled my kids and suggest others do the same. Read all the previous posts. It's really sad what has happened to the amazing teachers that felt they had to leave to be happy. What was once a little neighbor gem of a school is now a sad...

As a parent, I would not recommend this school to anyone until the current principal leaves. We had wonderful teachers leave last year, because of the way they were treated by the principal. This year we had teachers leave during the year and more are leaving at the end of the school year. This is a...

Please read the most current reviews. This school used to be a wonderful place 4 years ago, but there was a change in administration with a new Principal and Vice-Principal. They have had a huge teacher turnover every year, and the VP just quit out of the blue! No goodbye letter to parents or anythi...

The best teachers are leaving. One of their best teachers left last year and this year many more are leaving due to the current admin and poor, toxic environment they have created. Don't let anyone tell you it's for any other reason than that. The principal isn't a leader at all and often passes off...
