Spicewood Elementary School in Austin’s Bull Creek neighborhood is a standout even in Round Rock ISD–a notably high-achieving district. Much of the school’s success is due to its unique approach to learning. As an International Baccalaureate World School, students learn much more than academic fundamentals. They ask thought-provoking questions and think deeply about the answers. They become expert researchers and communicators while learning self-awareness and considering what it means to be a citizen of the world. Their hard work culminates in fifth grade with a final self-directed, intensive research project and exhibition.
Spicewood Elementary’s active parent-teacher association helps facilitate the school’s many enrichment activities. Students can enter the Scripps National Spelling Bee or form teams to compete in Destination Imagination, a program that challenges students to solve problems using creativity. The PTA also sponsors and tends the school’s splendid teaching garden.
