Like the famous explorer that is the school’s namesake, when students enroll at Magellan International School, they embark on an adventure. It may start in their Northwest Hills neighborhood, but it ultimately spans the globe. Erin Defossé, the school’s founder, established the school in 2007 when he realized Austin had no multilingual, international school for his own children, such as the one he had attended in Mexico. Today, the school welcomes over 500 students every year, has three state-of-the-art campuses, and is one of the most unique and academically rigorous preschool through eighth grade private schools in the city. Magellan students begin a dual-language Spanish immersion program at age three. Mandarin Chinese is added to the curriculum in third grade. By the time students go on to Austin’s most competitive high schools, they can read, speak, and understand at least three languages. STEM learning, which groups science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines, and language immersion, is at the core of the Magellan philosophy. Coding, engineering, labs, art, music, and design are seamlessly folded into the daily curriculum. Afterschool programs include robotics, golf, soccer, and even flamenco dancing. Students are invited to join the Model United Nations or Magellan Entrepreneur’s Club and can even participate in an exchange program in Madrid, Spain. Magellan grads are tri-lingual, tech-savvy young ambassadors, prepared for future paths in global economics, diplomacy, entrepreneurship, science, the arts, and more. At the Magellan International School—or El Colegio International Magallanes, as the students might say—their journey is just beginning.

My son has been at Magellan for Pre-K through middle school. His Spanish is outstanding. The teachers are extremely caring and connected to the students. My son is not a sporty student. Instead he has found his home in Model UN, drama and student leadership. The IB PYP and MYP have developed him into a genuine thinker. Magellan has been a wonderful place for him.

Magellan is truly one of the best private schools in Austin. It's not just the Spanish and Mandarin immersion, the IB curriculum, or the inquiry-based curriculum - it's also that the teachers are the most caring and compassionate and engaged teachers, that is what really matters. Our three kids are excited to go to school every day that makes the price tag fully worth it.

Unique to Austin, the International Baccalaureate curriculum paired with a true Spanish Immersion program, Magellan has given both of my kids, despite their very different personalities, a desire to love learning and face challenges head-on, as well as a deep-seeded curiosity of world cultures.

Amazing school. Loving, caring, well balanced yet rigorous IB program. Teaches kids the love of learning and taking actions in life. I cant wait to see what the Magellan kids will do out in the world eventually. Our family has been there for 9 years with 2 kids.

Our child has gone to Magellna since preschool and is now in 1st grade. The largest positive for Magellan is their commitment to bilingualism and cultural diversity. The largest negative for Magellan is everything else. As previous reviews have indicated, they rely heavily on screen time. As previou...

My child has been at Magellan for several years, starting in kinder. She came in already knowing Spanish and we were excited not only about continuing with the Spanish, but also the IB program. We’ve had 3 major issues with the school. First, they rely on television pretty heavily. Not learning or in...
