St. John School is a small, private Catholic school in the North End. It serves about 270 students per year from pre-kindergarten to grade eight. Like most places in the North End, the school has a rich history. It was built in 1873 to educate the children of new immigrants. Nowadays it hosts children from all across Boston, not just those residing in the North End. Although rooted in the Catholic tradition, St. John School welcomes students from all backgrounds. The curriculum is values based. The school’s underlying philosophy is to teach children to “do the right thing.” By taking advantage of its urban location and partnering with local organizations, the school is able to offer an appealing after-school program. During this time, students can take classes in engineering, music, arts and crafts, physical fitness and Chinese, among others. The student-to-teacher ratio at St. John School is less than the national average. Some parents and guardians are drawn to this school because of its small class size and low number of students — characteristics that often lead to a more personalized education.

Vibrant diverse community. City folks. After-school is a super power. Involved parents and good kids. I appreciate the values the kids learn to do right, socialize, and act with kindness.

I highly recommend this amazing School! I moved to Boston a year ago with my family from Italy and we were a bit concerned for our daughters (3 years old), since her native language is Italian. After only 6 months, my daughter feels comfortable with English language and she's the happiest girl. She...
