Formerly the Earle Brown Elementary School, Brooklyn Center Elementary STEAM follows a magnet school model to provide pre-K through fifth grade students a curriculum rich in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Through a Project Lead the Way curriculum, teachers show students how to apply what they have learned to solve real-world problems. As early as second grade, students are learning how to design a stable bridge. In fourth grade, they are designing water filters to provide clean drinking water and testing different insulation materials to find the best one. Fifth-grade students are using pulleys and levers to construct simple machines, designing environmental investigations and interpreting scientific data.
Not everything is science, though. Teachers at Brooklyn Center Elementary use the arts to inject creativity and critical thinking skills into the mix.
All the bases are covered at Brooklyn Center Elementary. A team of special education teachers helps Brooklyn Center Elementary students who have physical or mental disabilities achieve their potential. An English learners program helps children gain proficiency in reading, writing and speaking the language. Before- and after-school programs provide childcare for parents and enrichment opportunities for young minds.
Brooklyn Center Elementary is a member of the Brooklyn Center Community School District. Through partnerships with more than 100 community organizations, the district provides students and their families access to healthy food, free or reduced-cost health care, and mental health services to treat students’ social and emotional needs.
