The Brooklyn International School is dedicated to providing English language learners – particularly children of recent immigrants – an educational experience that caters to their language needs. Founded in 1994, it is located in Downtown Brooklyn on Flatbush Avenue Extension. The school serves students beginning in ninth grade through 12th grade, with a student-teacher ratio of around 13-to-1. Its student body represents more than 30 countries and 35 unique languages. In addition to deepening their understanding of the English language, the school also works to sharpen children’s intellectual, cultural and collaborative skills. The Brooklyn International School relies heavily on experiential and interdisciplinary project-based learning. As a part of their education, students complete a 12-week internship that’s based on their field of interest. On top of its academic programs, the school hosts several different cultural organizations, including African, Chinese and Haitian cultural clubs, which provide students with a sense of community and expose them to other cultures that the school represents.
