Cedar Elementary School, operated by the Canton City School District, is located on the city’s southwest side. Built at a cost of $7.6 million on the site of the former Cedar Street School, it was part of the district’s historic Design for the Future initiative, which passed in 1999 and rebuilt or renovated every school building in Canton. The new facility was one of the first school buildings to be completed under the building program and opened in 2002. It now serves students in kindergarten through third grade. Cedar Elementary School focuses on literacy and early math and number skills, with the goal of helping students build confidence and develop a foundation for success. The school’s teachers have been trained in research-based literacy teaching techniques. The goal is to develop a personalized learning program for each child. In addition to core academic instruction, students can participate in art, music, physical education and STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) instruction.
