East 126th Street is the home of Mohawk Trails Elementary School. The Mohawk Trails Turtles are named after the Native American legend of Anowara the turtle, who spreads seeds for crops around the earth. The community of Carmel, Indiana helps the seeds of education sprout in the lives of the Mohawk Trails Turtles.
Since 1972, this elementary school has joined the 10 other institutions in the Carmel Clay School District to provide highly rated education in the state. Mohawk Trails adopted the turtle as their school mascot as part of an extensive renovation project in 1997. Since then, Mohawk Trails teachers and staff have developed special area classes and a rigorous academic curriculum for students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Students can support their community through clubs, organizations and activities that change from semester to semester. In the past, students have performed at the Christkindlmarket in Carmel and participated in the annual Kindy 500, a day of racing and fun. Art, physical education, STEM, music and other special classes help students explore their talents in a welcoming community. A dedicated Makerspace offers the space, tools and materials needed for exploratory learning.
Members of the community can support this thriving educational institution as Parent-teacher organization volunteers. Known as the Ninja Turtle Crew, this dedicated team of volunteers prepares fundraisers and celebrates teachers throughout the year.
